Fluffy Toilet Paper Said to Be Worse for Environment Than Hummers
Friday , February 27, 2009
That super-soft toilet paper you're fond of using? It's an ecological disaster, environmentalists say.
Millions of trees are harvested throughout the Americas including rare old-growth forests in Canada to sustain the United States obsession with quilted, ultra-soft, multi-ply toilet paper, the New York Times reported.
Although toilet paper manufacturers could produce products from recycled materials at a similar cost, the newspaper reported, the fiber taken from standing trees are necessary to help give the tissue its fluffy feel.
No forest of any kind should be used to make toilet paper, said Dr. Allen Hershkowitz, a senior scientist and waste expert with the Natural Resource Defense Council told the Times.

***How about that $4,200,000,000,000 that Obama is printing? Isnt all that paper and ink bad for the environment?***
After INFLATION hits it will be cheaper to wipe with a dollar bill than a sheet of toilet paper.
No more lighting cigars with money!
I worked in third-world countries in the 70s and it was always a pleasure to use their wax-paper toilet “tissue.” Nothing says “civilization” like smearing instead of absorbing.
The intrusions in our lives never stop, do they? I have a new kitchen faucet and it takes about 7 minutes to fill a bucket with the flow restrictor. I just got a new GE dishwasher and the dishes are all sopping wet after the dry cycle - GE says they had to cut their power consumption during “dry” by half. California is planning to ban plasma TVs. Fluorescent bulbs required by CA building codes in baths and kitchens. Toilets that require 3 flushes.
Just leave us alone!
***I had the privelege of using some one-ply Scott tissue from the 50s, and it was miserable stuff.****
The worst toilet paper I ever used was Military issue . Very slick paper. Just smeared everything around. Had to use lots of sheets, not just the two military regs are supposed to allow.
That doesn't matter to the enviro wackos.
They hate tree farms because they are 'environmentally sterile'.
It can also be used for sandpaper.
Thought we were only supposed to use one sheet????
But Germany’s 5-ply toilet paper... gets a free pass?
They ain’t getting my Charmin Ultra until they pry it from my cold dead hands.
At which point I'll be in favor of putting Obama on the $1, Clinton on the $5 and Carter on the $10.
I try to buy the single ply stuff myself, but that’s because it’s a better deal and lasts longer per roll, not because of LW nitwittery about using forest products. The two ply is produced from lumber mill waste products, anyway, so there’d be no saving the environment in not making the stuff.
But not education and being a shameless lying political hack, unfortunately.

It sure beats corn cobs.
Maybe their use of the recycled stuff is why they suffer from the “red ass” all the time.
Besides, it makes one walk funny and feel grumpy all the time.
Did you know that in Cuba they don't flush the TP? Instead, they toss the used sheets into the garbage bags. I learned this only because I was jogging in my 'hood and noted a broken-open garbage bag, and several of the used sheets had spilled out on to the sidewalk.
“Did you know that in Cuba they don’t flush the TP?”
Sounds like Mexico. Next to the john is a big barrel where you throw the soiled TP. The stench is enough to drive out evil spirits.
I wish all of these idiots would get a real job and a life..
IIRC, it was Charmin that was banned in England.
Paper towel, Baby, that’s the way to go....
