The rodent-sized creature has thick fur and is unable to survive in temperatures much warmer than 80 degrees.
One can't help but wonder how it has survived this long then -- for example, its ancestors somehow managed during the Medieval Warming...

They move with the temperature. Just because they have to follow cooler temperatures to survive doesn't mean they're endangered.
