Gleason: Pa. GOP may not back Specter

Pennsylvania Republican Committee Chairman Robert Gleason Jr. said in an interview today that the state party may not support Sen. Arlen Specter in the Republican primary next year -- a day after his national counterpart suggested that GOP supporters of the economic stimulus bill could take a hit in upcoming elections.

"Of course, anything is a possibility," Gleason told The Morning Call. "It is up to the committeemen and committeewomen [next February]. … But the headline should not read that the state party is not going to endorse him. He certainly could be endorsed."

Gleason said that -- right now -- he is 100 percent supportive of Specter, but he would not commit to personally backing the five-term lawmaker when committee members endorse candidates next year.

"I really can’t make that call right now. That is kind of a what-if question. I really don’t know what it is going to be like," he said. "I don’t even know if he is going to be a candidate. Who knows what is going to happen a year from now. With all this conjecture about Arlen Specter’s reelection effort … if he is a candidate, we will cross that bridge when we get there."

Specter's vote for the economic stimulus bill ruffled GOP feathers throughout the country, but particularly in Pennsylvania, where the lawmaker has always stood on shaky ground with conservatives. He eked out a challenge from former Rep. Pat Toomey in a primary in 2004.

Specter has acknowledged the potential political impact of his vote.

I would like to see Rick Santorum run again. He was a fantastic U. S. Senator.

Why not?

When are people going to learn that Santorum sold us out. If he had not stood next to Specter the night before the election in 2004 while Toomey was six miles away having his final rally we would not have Specter today.

Specter’s vote cancelled out Santorum’s. He also campaigned for Lincoln Chafee.

He voted against guns. He called PA gunowners liars about his record.

You want more - I can give it to you. Santorum lives and works in Virginia. He has become a prostitute to the media. There’s not a microphone he doesn’t like.

With what is going on behind the scenes - Gleason will be gone and state committee will not endorse Specter.

Yeah and Ronald Reagan signed tax increases and liberal abortion laws as governor of California.

One thing I know: As Ronald Reagan once said, politics is the world’s second oldest profession.

Long ago I learned you cannot expect perfection among our politicians. You have to make the best possible choice among the available choices. My vote for John McCain last November was more of a vote AGAINST BHO and FOR Sarah Palin than it was for McCain.

Santorum sure wasn’t prefect, and as with ALL politicians you can find fault and imperfections. But, correct me if I’m wrong, Rick Santorum had, by far, the most conservative voting record of any U.S. Senator in modern Pennsylvania history. Look at the recent list of GOP senators from PA: Specter, Heinz, Scott etc. Santorum is vastly more conservative than any of those individuals.

Here in my crazy state we have Boxer and Feinstein. I would give anything to replace them with someone like Santorum.

Let’s see, he throws the pro-lifers under the bus, his score by the GOA was barely above Specter, his score in the state gun lobby group was barely above Specter, he was part of the spendaholics in congress.

Here were some 2006 scores he received while a Senator
Club for growth rated him a 73
Citizens Against Government Waste a 68%
GOA C
The New American Conservative Index 22

Maybe compared to your Senators that’s conservative but not where I am.

When he ran for the Senate he criticized his opponent for moving his family to Virginia after he got elected then what does he do, he moves his family to Virginia shortly after he was elected. Oh, he has a small two bedroom ranch which I don’t think he has ever stayed, I think he rents it out.

At the RNC Convention we little people/delegates never saw him mingle with us during social times. I only remember him behind a microphone with the press and then there was that stretch limo that picked him up early in the morning and dropped him off late at night. The rest of us rode busses.

The lesser of two evils is still evil.

You want more I can give you more.

When you start making excuses for someone then you lose the debate. Since you don’t live in PA I can’t expect you to know all the bad stuff.

Maybe he should have run for the Senate last year in Virginia where he now lives and works.
