5. We are Freepers, so why did we fail at not recognizing what was happening on 9/15/08 until long after the occurrence? Isn’t there some way we could have known about it so we could decide whether to panic or not?

I recognized it happening in 1992 when we elected a President amid shouts of "character doesn't count". My response was to start doing international business, so that I could potentially have an escape route. (Of course, I stupidly didn't anticipate that my kids would grow roots).

That’s what I’m doing.

It’s kind of hard not to.

The daily Obaminations are happening at a dizzying rate.

It all depends on what you’re saving for. He doesnt need his money in 2 years doesnt sound like. He needs it in 10-15 years for college, etc...
.
We’ve ALREADY lost a decades worth of growth, as the market hit an 11 year low yesterday.
.
I understand your thoughts and fears and the yahoos we have in office doesnt really give me any warm fuzzies either. But did the market come back after the great depression? What would $100 back then be worth today, even including inflation?? We aren’t even CLOSE to great depression despite what the MSM says...Not even close....Check out ‘79-’82. Can you say 21% interest rates??? Kind of hard to borrow capital to create jobs when thats the case.
.
Its a normal business cycle and I’d bet the farm that 5 years from now, your investment in good diversified growth stock funds will be worth more than it is today, including inflation. And i think it will probably be the same a year from now, but....

Use your common sense. Don’t allow yourself to become panicked. As long as you are prepared for problems, just relax and live your life.

You won’t do your kids any favors by making them fearful of the world.

A friend of mine has spent two nights in the hospital from anxiety attacks due to his fears of the economy. It isn’t worth it. Anxiety and panic lead to poor decision making.

I am already doing most of the things you’all have suggested. I am prepared to survive for only 6 months maybe 9. If we go over the cliff, I just want to know just before it happens or least not weeks later from the Drive-by-Media.
I am already doing the following:
1. (Well monthly) Panic on a daily basis!!
2. 1 case-Stock up on metals. Preferably lead.
3. 1 case and 3 months finances in gold-The western lifestyle is protected by two metals primarily. Gold is one. Lead is the other..........................
4. Ready to buy 4k worth of SPY, just waiting a little longer.-The stock market is ON SALE right now....You cant buy low and sell high without buying low! Buy on a consistent monthly basis and over time your money will grow. Good growth stock mutual funds have grown an average of 12% over the past FIFTY YEARS!! We dont know what the future holds, but we should rely a little bit on past performances of the market. Ups and downs happen. I’m down 55% over the past 18 months....Oh well....It WILL go back up again....
5. Looking to purchase brass knuckles-Don’t forget the brass.

6. Trying man, trying. Not enough money for a fin adviser:( Control what you can, don’t let what you can’t control effect your life.

7. I am planning on buying MS Streets and Trips soon, have a cave in mind close by(Matthew 24:16), still haven’t secured water purification tablets. I too was a Boy Scout -Just prepare as if a big storm was coming. (Would just like to find a good “weather channel” website.)
9. ?, Bible, well of course I am reading my Bible. I’d already be dead if I didn’t.-Anything by Alan Cairns is excellent...
Or - read the Bible.

I even secured some free Army Field Manuals at http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/library/policy/army/fm/
Thanks for the tips. Is Glenn Beck basically the only website that focuses on the when, “weather channel” type website.

Let’s talk in 24 months. You have a whole lot more confidence than I right now. My only glaring example is the Japanese market which has still not recovered from the lost decade.

Good point.

It's worth noting, however, that the sun still rises and sets in Japan every day . . . and they still have one of the highest standards of living in the history of mankind over there.

+1 What mnehrling said. VERY sage and sound advice all the way around.

Other than that, like others here have stated, I am into metals now.

I threw up my hands when my retirement fund evaporated and told my whatever you call that guy who handles such things to put whatever was left in metals. He said something about copper and some company called COR-BON and the letters “DPX.” I think those must be the letters they go by on the big board? Beyond that, I am clueless. (/s)

Get a VW? I have a recent Passat wagon that serves as a wonderful lawn ornament. Having owned two "proletarian Porsches" over the course of the past six years I cannot heartily enough encourage you to spend some quality time over at the VW Vortex forums http://forums.vwvortex.com/zeromain?id=3 before joining the ranks of the automobile uber masochists. This will serve as a welcome diversion from what unnerves you.

Well, here is my 2 cents worth:

Learn to live local. Try to not travel any further than possible.

Either turn your back yard into a garden or garden with someone knowledgeable on a coop basis. If you do this, remember that time is money and BE SURE YOU SHOW UP AND WORK WITHOUT BEING ASKED (Do you have older people in your church, family or friends who have garden space and knowledge, but putting in a big garden is too much for them. Work something out, then keep your part of the bargain).

Reduce your debt load - I would highly recommend the Dave Ramsey Financial Peace University. Go to the website and put your zip code in and you can find a class near you, or start a class.

Figure out what you would need to buy, and what you can grow or raise (for example, we are stocking up on coffee - our favorite - and storing it and hope to have at least a 1 year supply - we can raise or grow almost everything else.)

Make changes now. Learn to culture foods and teach your kids to eat those foods. Learn to make sourdough bread.

Wean yourself off of everything provided by Western culture that you don’t need. Worst case sceniaro is that in 6 months everything recovers and you have become closer to your family and the land. Again, make changes now. Learn to make soup from almost nothing.

Learn how to live in health so you don’t need a doctor or hospital. Use doctors and hospitals for emergencies only. Otherwise, learn healthy, simple living practices. I highly recommend Nourishing Traditions, a cookbook which gives you a roadmap to healthy living (and local living). It is a companion book to a much older book (but really a good one) by Weston Price called Nutrition and degenerative disease. Live in such a way that cholesteral, high blood pressure and heart disease, dementia and other junk are not an issue.

LIVING THIS WAY WILL HELP YOU MOVE OFF OF THE LEDGE OF PANIC! DON’T RAISE YOUR CHILDREN IN PANIC MODE. THEY DON’T TURN OUT WELL (sorry for yelling, been there, done that).

Make sure you are right with the Lord. Always be ready to meet him. Make sure your children are ready. Use wisdom, not panic, to govern your life.

Hope this is helpful to you. If not, just chalk it up to the ramblings of a woman fighting panic every day (today I am winning).

This is exactly what I’ve been thinking, but I’d probably say, “When is it time to ACT”, not panic.

I have to buy:

- $2000 worth of fencing and t-posts
- materials to build a goat shed, chicken coop, rabbit warren, milking stall and disbudding stall
- grain bins (probably garbage cans), watering troughs, hoses for the garden, etc.
- about $1500 worth of goods (meat grinder, sewing kit, extra fridge, etc)

Do I have a year to get all this together or months or weeks? At what point do I have to *move*? If I know that I have a year, we’ll be fine.

But will we make it a year?

I don't have to panic. I have guns and ammo. Anything I'll need I'll just get from some metrosexual sissy hoarder.

And I'll have to do is pull a 9mm cartridge from my pocket and he'll faint right away. When he wakes up he'll 'give' me his BMW, his stereo system, Plasma TV, his money, all his canned goods and prolly even throw in his trophy wife, Buffy. Just as long as I promise not to wrinkle his $3000.00 suit, mess his hair, or scuff his hand made Italian shoes.

My opinion is that we have about 6 months. By the fall, inflation should be kicking into high gear, which should cause all kinds of unpleasant things. Just double your efforts.

We are adding a greenhouse to the front of our house from scrap materials, and we are pouring concrete with piping in the floor that we can heat with our wood stove (hubby is a concrete guy, so we can do that for almost nothing). Already have the garden, pigs, chickens and neighbor has a cow.

Yeah, that’s what I am asking. ABOUT how much time do we have? We have the some of the smartest people here on this forum, so we should be able to point to a few measures or websites that monitor this stuff. For example, is there some measure like money supply, financial calculations. Surely, the people in Iceland, Argentina, and Rhodesia could have worked at finding some advance notice of the pain before it fully impacted them. Why can’t we?

My best guess is 6 months, but start now preparing so the shock of transition is not too much for the kids.

One tip, use 3-4 spices in almost everything (we use sea salt, pepper, cumin and cayenne) and when a new food joins our family, it is spiced with common flavors so it is not too new.

Good luck.

I am so sorry, but I do not have an indicator. I am going to watch for deflation turning into inflation for my “indicator”, but this indicator won’t change my behavior very much.

Maybe you should have either cash or gold at home in a safe place at all times.

If you know Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior you have everything you need.

Yes, it is smart to plan for the future.

Proverbs 27:12 (NIV)
“The prudent see danger and take refuge,
but the simple keep going and suffer for it.”

That being said, pray for wisdom and guidance and remember Isaiah 41:10.:) Plan to the best of your God-given resources and abilities and entrust it all to Him. He will never leave or forsake.

Mt 6:34

I've read all of the Freepers who think that there will be a stock market in a couple of years..... It's a shame there are a lot of you [still] out there hoping to make money on the next rise of Wall Street instead of paying attention. I got out of Wall Street 2 years ago when I realized things were not as they seemed. It's not about money here! It's about how to protect your family if and when something drastic happens. It's easy to make a list of what you might need pertaining to your family and your needs. From food to medical supplies and clothing. Do what needs to be done to prepare for an emergency. Do what you need to do to take care of your family now even if nothing will happen. Don't panic but make plans just in case.
If you live in the city make sure you have a way out and a place to go. Keep your wits about you and you will be alright. There will be good people out there when you need help. Those who have not prepared will be left behind. The Cricket and ants , do you remember the story?
