That's a pretty small target compared to the heart. Not really. Deer hearts ain't all that big. Head is a smaller target than what is often called the "kill zone", but that "zone" also encompasses the lungs which are most likely to be hit. Hit 'em in the lungs and they will die.....after they jump and run for a bit spreading the adrenalin. With a head shot you shut them off like a switch. High neck shots accomplish the same thing in my experience.

Not if you want a trophy!
A well placed shot behind the shoulder with a good round (high sectional density, terminal performance, etc.) will often drop a whitetail where they stand. I don't advocate head shots. Too small of a target and too much of a chance of wounding an animal. Save the head shots for small game.

I've never tried it. I always shoot for just behind the shoulder. I have done a hip shot once, pretty devastating. Big arteries there and it cripples them so they can't run.

Any recommendations on a good deer hunting gun? I use a Winchester 54 in 30-06. A lot will depend on your local laws and the type of land and terrain you'll be hunting. There are others here at FR far more knowledgeable than I on this subject. FReeper Squantos comes to mind.

I don’t think I am going to care about trophies if I have to go hunting it will be because our currency is worthless and the food stores are empty./p
Besides, how many antler racks can you possibly mount in one house?

Tried to say that in my last sentence but I guess it didn’t come out right. :(

I don’t advocate head shots either, there is the problem of shooting it’s jaw off and massive pain and prolonged horrible death as the animal cannot eat and dies of starvation. If the buck is a trophy, obviously you would shoot for a lung shot. I have never had gamey venison except when it was not cleaned and processed properly. I do all that myself so I don’t have to guess.

I have shot a lot of deer in my early years....
Said before I only had a 22 rifle back then.
That was the only shot I could use. Fed the family.

Occasionally but mainly just for Bow.
It's a pain to hang a tree stand at 4am in the morning.

Dang - Rush came so close to gripping the reality in that last monologue. He finally gets that the problem is our fellow countrymen who are blind - and blindly following. There is nothing to stop the wave that has come over us...and the next waves coming our way. Obozo owns everything.
Rush went directly to how (in such times past) this nation has been rescued by "the fog" in our birthing war. But he fails to see that the answer is The One Who sent the fog. The LORD has stripped us of everything else we have traditionally put our hope in - our bank account, our bootstraps, our education, our job, etc. That's because He wants us to realize that our Hope is completely in Him!
To: Joisey
Unless you're hunting elk or moose or, at the other end, those dog size deer of Mexico, a 30-06 is a reliable caliber for just about anything.
I have a Remington 700
Get a shotgun, too...in case you like wild poultry

No trophy hunter here. No matter how you cook ‘em, ya still can’t eat the horns. All my deer are for the freezer only. Never shot a buck more than a button. All the rest are does or fawns. Where I hunt, I don’t bother with shots over 100yds. so the wounding problem has never arisen for me.
