In these times of dire economic trouble, we're all watching President Barack Obama. Six hundred thousand jobs disappeared last month alone. Decisive action is needed — but this president does not act alone. He made that clear in his campaign. Obama is a community organizer, and we're his community; we have our part to play.
How does an ordinary citizen affect anything as massive as an economic meltdown? Last Sunday, 10 of us met in the College Park home of John Allen in response to a request from our president. All across the country, people were congregating at economic recovery house meetings.
Most of us in that living room had never participated in politics before the Obama campaign. Yet there we were, spending a cozy Sunday afternoon sitting in a crowded living room watching Obama present his plan via online video. Next, Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine answered questions. As the videos ended, we turned to one another. Now what?
When we donated to the campaign or worked the phone banks, we were told the real work would begin when the election was over. Here we were. We could call senators and make our voices heard. Then what? Obama hadn't asked us specifically to do anything, but we suspected that by gathering us together, he knew we'd think of something.
The recession is still mostly invisible in the middle-class world of Silicon Valley, but it's there when you look. Four of us were looking for work, two recently unemployed, two others trying to re-enter the work force after an absence. Kathy Stanley, recently unemployed and part of that alarming statistic quoted above, talked about recently joining a job-seeking club.

The “crisis” can work in our favor. I expect an exciting 2010 (so long as the Census is not rigged). One that replaces old socialists with small government, free marketeers.

Let’s see Dh just got back from the grocery store. He bought a loaf of bread, a 16oz container of sour cream, a bundle of green onions, a 16oz bag of noodles and 8 donuts(not on the list!) and spent just a hair over $13. looks like that big stimulas is going to go realllllly far, NOT!
