If Moderates voted for Conservatives then all moderates would be Conservatives. Then "Conservatives" who vote for Moderates are Moderates, not real Conservatives.

Conservatives sometimes vote for moderates when the choice is between a moderate and a liberal, or would vote for a moderate when that moderate is the more conservative. See the 2008 Presidential race.
