Pennsylvania voters divided over Specter reelection
Pittsburgh Business Times ^ | Feb 12 2009

Pennsylvania voters are "sharply divided" over whether U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter should be reelected, according to a new poll released Wednesday.

Forty-three percent of voters polled by Quinnipiac University said they did not think Specter deserves to be reelected, compared to 40 percent who said he was entitled to keep his job.

But 56 percent of voters said they approved of the job Specter is doing. That approval rating goes up to 62 percent among Democrats, higher than the Republican support rate of 55 percent, the poll found.

Clay F. Richards, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute, said Specter's approval rating may be tied to his support of President Barack Obama's economic stimulus plan. Specter is one of three Republican Senators who supports the plan, Richards notes.

"But Specter has always been politically controversial and has needed votes from both parties to stay in office," he added.

Specter, who turns 79 on Thursday, is the longest-serving senator in Pennsylvania history. He is currently in his fifth term. He has battled cancer since first being diagnosed in 2005.

Because Pennsylvanians are weird. I don’t think we are a strictly liberal state yet. Obama’s got it wrong.

Not all of us voted for Specter. He was almost kicked out in the last primary.

Toomey would have been great. But, with President Bush campaigning for Spectre, (spelling on purpose) he was able to win. Could never understand why W supported him, when evertime W needed his help, he (Spectre) turned his back on him and the rest of the Republicans.

Pennsylvania went overwhelmingly for the zero.

If the GOP had put up a candidate who could articulate, or one with some sense of economics ....

... or one who was more dynamic and energetic and willing to actually FIGHT Obama instead of praising him .....

... or one who didn't have such animosity toward faith-based Christians.....

or one who wasn't so freakin' old (sorry, McCain. It's simply the truth) .....

Then the GOP would have likely taken Pennsylvania because Pennsylvania was looking for a reason to vote AGAINST Obama.... but McCain simply was the most boring, most white-bread wimp of a candidate in recent memory.

Heck, Bob Dole was a better fighter than McCain... and that's saying something.

I’d consent to keep the mini-Marxists in Pittsburgh and Erie if we could only unload Philadelphia and force New Jersey to take it.

What the hell happened to Pennsylvania?

Obama insults them, Murtha insults them even more, on several occasions - and they seem to eat it up?

Good grief?

Maybe the deserve all the insults?

I don’t believe this constitutes a flame, but a Californian bashing Pennsylvanians? Hello...pot, kettle, black. You just have nicer weather and earthquakes...Feinstein and Boxer.

That which you mention doesn’t have ANYthing to do with me. Rather, it is directly due to the population in two places, Los Angeles & San Fransisco. Seems there’s more idiots there than in the rest of the the State.

Pennsylvania did not go overwhelmingly for the Zero. There was a whole lot of red in the ‘t.’ Philly routinely has 110 percent voter turnout; and this time they had quasi-Black Panther/Acornists ‘guarding’ polling places there as well. With fraud out of the mix, it was a whole lot closer. There really, and trully are conservatives here...we elected Rick Santorum...and then HE went all party-first AS OPPOSED TO HOLDING TRUE TO HIS (OUR) CONSERVATIVE VALUES and supported Specter (at the behest of GWB)...which lead to his loss which gave us Casey. So...in way...ITS BUSH’S FAULT!!!

Hi PaMom.

That was my first thought too! Somebody from CALIFORNIA - the land of “fruits and nuts” - bashing Pennsylvanians?! Now THAT is funny!! LOL!! Seems we’re opposite ends of the same stick!

I could easily repost, inserting Pittsburgh and Philadelphia...and your statement would apply to Pennsylvania (and I’ll see you San Diego, and raise you Erie).

That’s convoluted but, in a strange way, it makes sense! lol!

Yeah, no doubt about it. That time it WAS Bush’s fault.

And Pittsburgh and Philly don’t have anything to do with me either. My county went fully RED - as did most of the other counties in the middle of Pa. Our problem here is unions and the huge amount of voter fraud in the Philly machine. I agree with the poster who said we need to make Philly part of New Jersey.

I have gotten flamed here alot (but not so much recently) with my opinion that if Santorum had told GWB...NO. I am supporting Toomey; in theory...and I really think this could have happened...we could still have Santorum (as our Senior Senator); and Toomey as our Junior Senator (w/please, let it happen) Peg Luksik as our future Governor. But as JQuinn says...they stuck their (blank) in the pot...and look what we have ...Specter/Casey.

Would you hope Hitler would have died before he killed more? Of course. Was I hoping Satan would have called Specter “home” before now? Of course. Unfortunately he is still alive and plaguing PA!

-Be patient. The night is still young and Kennedy, Specter and Byrd are sooooo old.
