GREGG WITHDRAWS NOMINATION FOR COMMERCE SEC

For Immediate Release:
Thursday, February 12, 2009

Senator Gregg Statement on His Withdrawal for Consideration of U.S. Commerce Secretary

Sen. Gregg stated, “I want to thank the President for nominating me to serve in his Cabinet as Secretary of Commerce. This was a great honor, and I had felt that I could bring some views and ideas that would assist him in governing during this difficult time. I especially admire his willingness to reach across the aisle.

“However, it has become apparent during this process that this will not work for me as I have found that on issues such as the stimulus package and the Census there are irresolvable conflicts for me. Prior to accepting this post, we had discussed these and other potential differences, but unfortunately we did not adequately focus on these concerns. We are functioning from a different set of views on many critical items of policy.

“Obviously the President requires a team that is fully supportive of all his initiatives.

“I greatly admire President Obama and know our country will benefit from his leadership, but at this time I must withdraw my name from consideration for this position.

“As we move forward, I expect there will be many issues and initiatives where I can and will work to assure the success of the President´s proposals. This will certainly be a goal of mine.

“Kathy and I also want to specifically thank Governor Lynch and Bonnie Newman for their friendship and assistance during this period. In addition we wish to thank all the people, especially in New Hampshire, who have been so kind and generous in their supportive comments.

“As a further matter of clarification, nothing about the vetting process played any role in this decision. I will continue to represent the people of New Hampshire in the United States Senate.”

In other words, Barry lied to me about my terms of employment.

Now that Gregg's been scorned, maybe he will become a crusader for our side. Nothing like being made a fool of to convince a person see the light.

Says he's still going to represent NH.

I assume he did it like Hillary, kept his seat till he went through confirmation.

Does this mean that Gregg keeps his senate seat? Gregg has not resigned it yet, correct?

It is good he withdrew. I do not trust that his state Gov. would have appointed a Republican. I know the GOP higher ups were not worried but I didn’t share that confidence.

Thank you Senator Gregg! It is good to see principles shine over self-interest.

I wonder if Commerce easing up on Syrian sanctions was the last straw.

Maybe if Obambi Amin moves a Democrat into this office, he’ll move the Census back there.

What did Michael Steele have to say about this? Saw a mention in the title that he was on TV, but no mention of what he said.

Thanks!

In other countries, they call this sort of thing a vote of no confidence.

Senator Gregg voted with his feet.

“The problem is that 0be wants to rule. “

As the Dems keep saying, “We won, we get to write the bill”

I was thinking more along the lines that he did pay his taxes.

I'm not sure that's true. From the reports it seemed as though the census would remain in Commerce, but that it would also be reported to the Chief of Staff. Gregg could have still kept on eye on things. If that's the case, he could have proved very useful, blowing the whistle and/or resigning later over the politicization of the process would have been far more damaging to Obama.

You know, when I heard about this happening this morning, I wondered what Gregg’s reaction would be.
