Indonesia: police claim to have killed terrorist Noordin Top
17 Sep 2009

Police in Indonesia claim to have killed the fugitive terrorist mastermind Noordin Mohammad Top during a raid in Java. Elite counter-terrorist police stormed a house in on the island killing four people after a nine-hour siege.

They said later that among the dead was Top, the leader of a splinter group of Jemaah Islamiyah, a group allied to al-Qaeda that was behind the major bombings in Bali and a string of later attacks including the blasts in the capital, Jakarta, in July.

Poice have claimed before to have killed Top before, only for himto re-emerge and organise new attacks. Anti-terrorist police have redoubled their efforts to capture Top since they mistakenly thought he was killed in a raid that ended a 17-hour siege last month. Malaysian-born Top, 41, leads a group called Al-Qaeda in the Malay Archipelago, and has long been at the top of the Indonesia's wanted list. A veteran Islamist and the most notorious terrorist in south-east Asia, he is the group's recruiter, strategist and financier.
