Swine Flu Case Now Suspected in Minnesota
A new strain of flu... Dubbed swine flu has hit the U.S. after killing dozens in Mexico.
The list of people testing positive for the virus is growing here in the U.S., and so is the list of states... including here in Minnesota.
Kansas, Massachusetts, New York, Texas, and California also have confirmed or suspected cases.
U-S health officials are warning people who may have recently traveled, or have flu-like symptoms to get checked by a doctor and take precautions.

UK crew member in hospital after Mexico flight

LONDON (Reuters) - A British Airways cabin crew member was taken to a London hospital as a precaution after developing flu-like symptoms on a flight from Mexico City, the airline said on Saturday.
“He has flu-like symptoms and is responding well to treatment,” a hospital spokesman said in a statement.
“The patient was admitted directly to a side room and the hospital is scrupulously following infection control procedures to ensure there is no risk to any other individual in the hospital.
“A Health Protection Agency (HPA) spokesman said in a statement: “We are aware of a patient admitted to a London hospital with reported travel history to Mexico.”

Obama was received at Mexico’s anthropology museum in Mexico City by Felipe Solis, a distinguished archeologist who died the following day from symptoms similar to flu, Reforma newspaper reported. The newspaper didn’t confirm if Solis had swine flu or not.
The Mexican government is distributing breathing masks to curtail the disease’s spread. There is no vaccine against the new strain of swine flu, health authorities said.
Museums, theaters and other venues in the Mexico City area, where large crowds gather, have shut down voluntarily and concerts and other events canceled to help contain the disease. Two professional soccer games will be played tomorrow in different Mexico City stadiums without any fans, El Universal newspaper reported. Catholic masses will be held, the newspaper said, although church officials urged worshipers to wear breath masks and to avoid contact.

The Interior Ministry published in the Official Gazette a decree by which the executive takes control of operations in the country to prevent, control and combat the influenza virus.
The paper, published in a special edition of the Official Journal, contains 13 measures and systems, including the possibility of temporary closure of sites with high concentration of people such as local or entertainment centers.
The decree, signed by President Felipe Calderón and the Secretary of Health Jose Angel Cordova Villalobos, comes into force this Saturday and contains the following:
I. The isolation of people who may suffer from the disease and carriers of germs of the same for as long as is strictly necessary, and the limitation of their activities, where warranted by epidemiological reasons.
II. The application of serums, vaccines and other preventive and therapeutic resources.
III. The inspection of passengers who are potential carriers of germs, as well as luggage, transportation, goods and other objects that may be sources or vehicles of pathogens.
IV. Admission to all kinds of local housing or for carrying out activities aimed at controlling and combating the epidemic.
V. The utilization of all medical resources and social welfare of the public, social and private sectors.
VI. The acquisition nationally or internationally, medical equipment, diagnostic agents, and surgical treatment and hygiene products, as well as all types of goods, works, goods and services that are necessary to meet the contingency, without the need for exhausting the competitive bidding process for the quantities or concepts needed to cope.
VII. Import and authorize the import of goods and services mentioned in the preceding paragraph, without exhausting any administrative proceeding for the quantities or concepts to address the contingency view of this decree.
VIII. Atingentes order measures to prevent congregations of people at any venue, including the temporary closure of premises or entertainment centers.
IX. Entrusted to the federal, state and municipal as well as professional technicians and auxiliary disciplines for health, performance of activities it deems necessary.
X. The regulation of transit by land, sea and air, and dispose of all transportation and state-owned public service, whatever the legal regime they are subject to the latter.
XI. Free and priority use of telephone services, postal and telegraph, and radio and television, establishing guidelines and information necessary in order to convey clear and timely measures to cope with the contingency.

When the story first broke last month, Czech newspapers questioned if the shocking discovery of vaccines contaminated with the deadly avian flu virus which were distributed to 18 countries by the American company Baxter were part of a conspiracy to provoke a pandemic.
Since the probability of mixing a live virus biological weapon with vaccine material by accident is virtually impossible, this leaves no other explanation than that the contamination was a deliberate attempt to weaponize the H5N1 virus to its most potent extreme and distribute it via conventional flu vaccines to the population who would then infect others to a devastating degree as the disease went airborne.
However, this is not the first time that vaccine companies have been caught distributing vaccines contaminated with deadly viruses.
In 2006 it was revealed that Bayer Corporation had discovered that their injection drug, which was used by hemophiliacs, was contaminated with the HIV virus. Internal documents prove that after they positively knew that the drug was contaminated, they took it off the U.S. market only to dump it on the European, Asian and Latin American markets, knowingly exposing thousands, most of them children, to the live HIV virus. Government officials in France went to prison for allowing the drug to be distributed. The documents show that the FDA colluded with Bayer to cover-up the scandal and allowed the deadly drug to be distributed globally. No Bayer executives ever faced arrest or prosecution in the United States.
In the UK, a 2007 outbreak of foot and mouth disease that put Britain on high alert has been originated from a government laboratory which is shared with an American pharmaceutical company, mirroring the deadly outbreak of 2001, which was also deliberately released.
As we reported yesterday, last time there was a significant outbreak of a new form of swine flu in the U.S. it originated at the army base at Fort Dix, New Jersey.

On Friday, the U.S. disease-tracking blog Biosurveillance published a timeline of the outbreak containing this nugget, dated April 6 (major tip of the hat to Paula Hay, who alerted me to the Smithfield link on the Comfood listserv and has written about it on her blog, Peak Oil Entrepreneur):
Residents [of Perote] believed the outbreak had been caused by contamination from pig breeding farms located in the area. They believed that the farms, operated by Granjas Carroll, polluted the atmosphere and local water bodies, which in turn led to the disease outbreak. According to residents, the company denied responsibility for the outbreak and attributed the cases to “flu.” However, a municipal health official stated that preliminary investigations indicated that the disease vector was a type of fly that reproduces in pig waste and that the outbreak was linked to the pig farms.
The real kicker? Thus far, the possible connection to Smithfield’s Mexican operation (Granjas Carroll, above) has not been reported in the U.S. news media.
But it’s all over the Mexican media. The stories tell of giant cess pools of improperly treated pig waste creating massive air and water pollution and a breeding ground for virulent pathogens. “Clouds of flies” swarm over the waste and are the most likely carriers of this new and deadly disease. Now 30% of the area residents around the operation are infected with this new swine flu, and residents are demanding the Mexican government examine Smithfield’s Mexican hog operations as a potential culprit.
The Mexican government’s response? Silence.
Why does this scare me?
Because although a bit more regulated, our factory hog farms are no less pristine. Just last year the Pew Commission on Industrial Farm and Animal Production warned of emerging forms of avian-swine-human influenza viruses here in the U.S.
Baxter International has already announced (yday) they are making swine flu vax.

Authorities distributed vaccines among all the medical personnel with no results, because two of my partners who worked in this hospital (interns) were killed by this new virus in less than six days even though they were vaccinated as all of us were. The official number of deaths is 20, nevertheless, the true number of victims are more than 200. I understand that we must avoid to panic, but telling the truth it might be better now to prevent and avoid more deaths.”
