Arlen Specter should start sweating.
Specter undoubtedly thought he dodged a (non-magic) bullet recently when Chris Matthews decided against running for Specter's U.S. Senate seat next year. The MSNBC talking head would have been a formidable foe.
But if recent rumblings in political circles prove true, that bullet soon might be replaced by a cannonball headed directly for the five-term incumbent.
People want to persuade Steelers' legendary running back Franco Harris to make a Senate bid. You know Harris. He's the bearded guy who caught the Immaculate Reception.
Don't take my word that Democratic insiders want Harris to run. Take the word of state Democratic Committee Chairman T.J. Rooney, who recently told the Politico Web site just that.
Harris, 58, of Leet, the owner of Super Bakery/RSuper Foods in McCandless, did not return a phone message Thursday regarding his possible interest in the Senate seat.
But the idea of a Harris candidacy made sense even before the Steelers defeated the Arizona Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII Sunday, whipping Western Pennsylvania into an even greater Black-and-Gold frenzy than usual.
True, the last time a Steelers great ran for statewide office, he fumbled the ball. Hall-of-Fame wide receiver Lynn Swann was trounced when he sought to unseat Gov. Ed Rendell in 2006, winning less than 40 percent of the vote.

I heard that he sounded terrible in pressers as well.
Frankly, I’m still surprised that Caroline Um Yaknow Kennedy didn’t get HER celebrity seat.
There’s still Uncle Teddy’s Massachusetts seat, I guess, so she may be down but she’s not out.
Yep; Rooney’s mention of Obama at the Lombardi Trophy presentation after the game was stupid, out of place, and put a damper on the excitement of the game.
Theres a GOP in PA? I thought there was a bunch of Hillmans and other RINOS.The R are not laughable, they are downright invisible.
I almost guarantee, Franco knows nothing of Scottish law.
This will be an interesting one to keep an eye on.
I wanted to reach through the television and punch him until I realized he had the same look about him that my grandmother had as she developed dementia. I’m not so sure he’s all there anymore.
Did it not make you absolutely ill when Dan Rooney right after the Super Bowl said, “I would like to thank President Obama...blah blah blah.”
I swear everyone at our party said, “WTF did he have anything to do with it?” in unison.
This Obama mania is just too much.
Anybody? Really? Resepctfully, that, sir is inane.
More than a few FReepers went ballistic when Ben Stein donated to his friend, Al Franken. I think rightly so. So, if Harris is a dedicated liberal he shouldn’t have supported Swann.
The two (friendship and political support) can and should be separated. I told my lib son if he ever ran for office I wouldn’t give a dime or vote for him!
I wouldn’t support any of my friends, especially not the liberal ones, for elected office. I know them too well.
No. Lynn Swann is very personable, friendly and well spoken. He is also very telegenic and doesn’t come across as ‘slick’ like Rendell. He had absolute idiots running his campaign.
Harris, though I have never read anything.bad about him, to me seems kind of dour, not gregarious or personable.
>> Im not so sure hes all there anymore.
I have seen evidence that dementia is not a disqualifier for a Senate career.
Sorry about your grandmother, though.
Others have noted the dementia look as well.
Dan Rooney...not Franco we are supposing has dementia. Harris just suffers from ObamaMania...
Too much yardage between the goal posts.
Oh, sorry. My bad.
Now don’t be thinking I have it! (not yet, anyway. I hope.)
I don’t see him as a bad replacement for Specter...and he is waaaaaay smarter than Casey (who would be the Senior Senator from PA!?!)
Heaven. Help. Us.
:). I think a slight touch of forgetfulness might get us all thru these trying times...
You may be right on the dementia.
Another thing that came to mind was that with all of the money he has, he should splurge and go buy a different pair of glasses.
