The President walked alone across the South Lawn grass, gave a quick wave to the press and boarded Marine One. But, first he stopped to shake the hand of the very startled, caught off-guard Marine who was standing at attention at the steps to the helicopter.

It woulda been a classic. The White House coon remarks were getting a little too much, I suppose.
Jim's too classy to let this place fall into cheap jokes, like DU and their 'chimp' stuff....damn sorry I missed the thread, though!

I believe you are correct. I recall comments made to that effect when President Reagan first saluted the honor guard. They remarks were that he was breaking tradition.

Did he ask for the pilot to write his name in the sky?

He walks on his toes. I had an ex-boyfriend who did that. It drove me nuts.
I find a new reason to despise him everyday...

You mean POTUS is above his pay grade?"
By several parsecs, I would say.

For the purposes of this 'fly' and 'go' anywhere are the same. DC has a 30 mile radius of restricted airspace. the inner ring is functionally prohibited airspace. Harm's way? Air Force One went to Baghdad, a pretty harmful place. Marine One flies in other places than DC.
Its not even a close argument.
Ever been a helicopter pilot?

That marine is going to have his a$$ absolutely reamed when the commanders at 8th and I hear about this. I doubt it. The story doesn't say that the Marine didn't salute...unless I missed it. Let's assume he did and then President Obama offers a shake. When someone senior offers his hand, you take it.

No, and the question is irrelevant.
Do some research on this and you’ll find I’m right about the flight path.
Beyond that, the debate is going nowhere.

“Go where you want” refers to a destination. “Fly where you want” refers to the path of the journey to the destination.
So, no they are not the same “for the purposes of this”.

Obama spoke to reporters on board about the stimulus plan and said it was important to make sure the recovery package is of significant size to do what is needed to create jobs. He said that every economist will agree if you have a trillion dollars lost, the range is $800 billion for the recovery plan. Obama said that is the scale and they are in range. Repeat a lie enough and it becomes the truth.

I’m not sure where this started, but here’s the gouge...
Lol! “Restricted airspace” is there to protect high level places and people - like the President. The President can go wherever he wants the aircraft to go.
Dh is a military pilot. He has two friends who fly for HMX-1. Once, while on one of many flights to New Orleans, the President told the pilots that he wanted to land (pointing out the window) “over there.” Given the still torn up condition of the said area, the pilots used some of their best maneuvering to place the a/c safely where the President wanted to walk around. If it can be done, then they do it.
If the President wants to do a fly over of the Kennedy Space Center, then that’s what they do. There are no restrictions on the President.
