We are not betraying our neighbors,

Yes we are - they will be punnished becuase they have figured out how to build a better mouse trap

we are supporting our country.

No we are not. This buy American provision will do nothing but reward inefficiency and inflate the price of steel. Why are higher prices good at this time?

It is not our job to stimulate other countries...they can and should take care of their own...we need to do the same.

Fine - just don't use the government to interfere with my right to buy whatever I want at the lowest price. I though freedom from govermnent intrusion was a conservative ideal

As for the usual name calling... Giving our dollars to the Communist Chinese...now that’s advocating and support a communist state. As for Europe...when they start taking our steel...we can talk.

Are these statements making some kind of point? If so, I don't get it.

Go away troll

Horsehocky! Jobs are a national resource like energy or topsoil or potable water, and need to be husbanded and protected.

False. Jobs are not a resource, labor is a resource. Labor should be used wherever it is most productive and it is the free market that determines where that is.

Subsidizing an uneconomical use of labor is like growing cotton and rice in the desert with subsidized water. Oh wait, we do that too!

I wish I could make most of my own stuff because I sure don’t want to buy products from the Chinese Communist which seem to all that’s available these days.

—What are you doing to help your community when you buy produce and farm items from out of state? Aren’t you stealing what properly belongs to your local farmer?—

I live in Pennsylvania. We have plenty of local farmers in my area, but, for some reason, none of them seem to grow bananas or citrus fruits, so I have to purchase them from out of state farmers. Reckon that makes me a traitor and a thief, then. </s>

Smoot-Hawley didn’t matter in the 30’s

That is a fine example of idiotic pig-blind stupidity.

Yes and we all know that cheap foreign labor will always be more productive...thus you are advocating destroying the economy by destroying jobs in this country...which will surely lead to socialism.

start a trade war and we’ll have 25% unemployment and not just here but around the free world. make your own choices as to what to buy but making it national policy is a bad bad idea. Would you rather be forced to buy a GM car instead of having a choice?

Believing something because it has been said over and over is a fine example of pig-blind stupidity. The Smoot-Hawley thing doesn’t stand up to the most basic research...it’s merely a convenient argument for free-traitors who support a policy that is destroying this country.

That is an excellent explanation of the protectionist mindset.

"I am smart enough to know if other countries erect trade barriers against us...look at our trade deficit...then free trade is not really free, but completely one sided...they import we buy-all the while destroying our jobs, economy and our Republic. One sided free trade can not work-it’s a form of national suicide."

Two Sided Protectionism will be worse.

When the Markets for American Exports get snuffed in retaliation what is your plan?

Explain how a trade war will help us.

Show us please in facts and Figures? When GM has to pay a higher tariff on electronic parts for their Cars how does that help Americans when GM raises their Prices to pay for the Increase? The Tariff Money goes to the Government. Think Obama and his Merry Men will pass that moola onto you personally or will it get spent on Global Warming and a study on the Three toed Sloth?

Sending more money to the Government is as dumb as you can get. But how they will all pound their Chests and tell you to Vote for them cause they stopped Foreign Imports.

If you really want to protect American Jobs tell the Government to repeal the Labor and Safety Rules and Regulations they have heaped on Business these past 60 Years and maybe we can afford to actually run a business in the US for a change.

I see a big difference between a Chinese commie and union workers-formerly called Reagan Democrats until they were driven out of the big tent by free traders. China spends their money on weapons which will one day be used against us or our children...Union workers have not vowed to conquer this country...Reagan bankrupted the USSR...We are allowing China to do the same to us. How Stupid can you get?

I suspect many protectionists secretly have a slothful, sloppy business that cannot compete without the favoritism of Uncle Sugar.

...by free traders.

What's that!?!

You missed a chance to use your uber-clever and oh-so-funny "free traitors" mantra.

Too bad. I was just about to be convinced by it.

The Smoot-Hawley nonsense was an excuse made on behalf of Wall Street to an angry population.

The why was it that the panic began the very day Smoot Hawley was certain to come out of committee?

I live in PA also and have noticed the almost criminal recalcitrance of local farmers in the matter of growing tropical fruits and vegetables. Don't worry. Mugabe junior has plans to give those farms to veterans of community organizing. Shortly they will produce nothing at all.

GM can’t even sell their products in Korea because of trade barriers...left in place with the new so called free trade agreement which has yet to be signed...the Japanese have VAT tax which they exempt on their own auto’s but not on American autos...they also have engaged in dumping over the last 20 years...sell their product in America for less than what it cost domestically and make up the loss in their close markets.
