"How about we match tariffs?" Tariffs are TAXES plain and simple.
It is astounding that here on FREE Republic, we have arguments in favor of HIGHER TAXES (tariffs) and LESS FREEDOM (to trade with whom we want).
Welcome to your National Socialism.

Tariffs are not taxes “plain and simple”. They are also an effective method for diplomacy, negotiating trade deals, and protecting industries that are vital to US survival.

It's amazing that the "free traders" keep pulling out that old chestnut. For the millions of Americans who EARN their living, they are punished by the "free traders" with income taxes.
In the run up to the Civil War, and afterwards, until the "free traders" managed to get the 16th amendment enacted, EVERYBODY knew that if tariffs were eliminated, income taxes would be needed to pay for the government.
Low and behold! The more "free trade" we've had in the last 30 years, the higher our income taxes and the bigger the federal government.
It is cause and effect. It's astounding that here on FREE Republic, we have "free traders" arguing that Americans can't have the choice of purchasing a domestically made good with no taxes, or a foreign made good with tariffs.
Welcome to National socialism, brought to you by the "free traders" Bush, Clinton, Bush and now Obama. There is a direct correlation between these "free traders" agendas and the socialism we are now being forced into.
Study British socialism. Many thoughtful Brits commented in the 19th century that "free trade" would cause the laborers to favor communism because they had their economic security destroyed by "free trade". Now it's our turn. It's no joke some people say "free traitor" instead of "free trader".

Tariffs are constitutional plain and simple. The 16th amendment is arguably NOT.
