Which is why they had cabin boys.

But soon they became cabin men. :o)

The thing which surprises me is that a ship of that era had well over a thousand sailors on it

HMS Mary Rose of Henry VIII sank in 1545 with around 700 on it.

My husband, who has read many many military and historical novels, says it was written you could "smell" the ship over the horizon as there were over 1100 sailors on a 200 foot long ship. I know you all wanted to know that. :-) Cordio

Present
sink

Past
sank

Past Participle
was sunk

Who taught these people their English, specifically verb forms?? the word they are looking for is, SANK. The ship SANK. They can say "was sunk" but the correct "past" form is SANK. argh.... /rant

Just saw this on a discovery program Friday evening. They were using a code name for the Victory so that it would not reveal anything to other hunters. I suspected that it was Victory but the show did not take the exploration through to the final identification.

In the book “Seize The Fire” Adam Nicolson describes in horrific gory detail how at the Battle of Trafalgar the English cannonballs fired into the rear of the French and Spanish ships at close range, tore down the whole length of those ships doing absolute murder on the men packed into the gun-decks.

Wow! Man/gun ratio gun going up fast. Let me attempt to “buy now”. I bid 50 men/gun!

Oops! I got too many guns in there. But then, I always hear here it is not possible to have too many guns. Let me hide (conceal) one.

I thought of taking a WAG, but decided to check the internets first

The Method and Procedures of Nelson's Navy

The Gun Crew
The large cannon of a ship of the line needed a crew of up to eight men to load and fire it and another six to eight men to man the recoil rigging and run out the gun when loaded. The gun crew included: Most of the "gun gew" estimates overlook the muscle guys need to run the guns out for firing as they may not have been assigned to a specific gun, and were also the damage control men.

Smaller guns you may be able to operate without Handspikeman, Assistant loaders and Assistant spongers.

The site I originally checked gave a total of 8 for a 12 pdr (c.40 on the upper decks), 12 for a 24 pdr (c.30 on the middle deck) and 14 for a 32pdr (c.30 on the lower deck)

In the mid-18th century a First Rate would be carrying 42pdrs on the lower deck - replaced by 32pdrs in the early 19th mainly because of the extra crew needed for the heavier gun)
