Right before he came out with his first album, he was plastered all over the front of every major magazine. Had some really good promoters early on. I’ve always thought of him as a manufactured talent like the Monkees. Okay—back to the game....
He was manufactured so the whites could have something as big as that other jackass, Michael Jackson. Boooooooooooo

I was at the checkout stand at the NTC San Diego PX in 1975/76 when I first saw his visage on the cover of TIME (or was it Newsweak).
I tried but never understood the appeal of his “music”.
He had already released two albums when the Time and Newsweak covers happened in 1975.
