Republican John McCain intends to run in 2010 for a fifth term in the U.S. Senate, and the recent history of senators thwarted in bids for president suggests hell be able to rebound smartly from his loss to Democrat Barack Obama in last Novembers White House contest.
John Kerry, the Massachusetts Democrat who narrowly lost in 2004 to President George W. Bush, coasted to an easy victory last year for a fifth Senate term. Even South Dakota Democrat George S. McGovern, fresh off his 1972 landslide defeat at the hands of President Richard M. Nixon, came back to win a third Senate term in 1974, though he lost when he went to that well one more time in 1980.
Obama even gave McCain a big break by taking his strongest potential Arizona Democratic challenger out of the picture. Obama selected Janet Napolitano, a popular governor due to run up against the states term-limit law in 2010, as his pick to head the Department of Homeland Security. Until she accepted the Cabinet post, Napolitano appeared likely to run for the Senate in 2010, and early hypothetical polls suggested she would be a strong contender.
No one else appears poised to provide such a threat with Napolitano moved on to Washington. The most recent Democratic Senate nominee was Jim Pederson, a wealthy real estate developer who ran a vigorous campaign in 2006 but nonetheless lost to Republican incumbent Jon Kyl by a substantial 10 percentage-point margin. I doubt he would take on McCain, said Bruce Merrill, a pollster and professor emeritus at Arizona State Universitys Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication.
Merrill said of McCain, I really dont think hes going to have much difficulty being re-elected.

Joe is a democrat.
Well, he did start mouthing off about Jon Kyl the other day.
exactly! When Larry King asked him if he was going to support Sarah for 2012 his comment was “Jon Kyl might run”... no way should Palin help him in the primary. She might in the general, though.
I suppose that means that McManiac will be campaigning against the bill to get Obama to “prove” he’s qualified, too.... LOL...

voters holding politicians accountable-from your lips to God’s ears!
I am shocked at the number of Californians who have moved over here. I expected that they would be the conservatives moving out, but it’s not, it’s the bleeding liberals and they are ruining our politics here. Everywhere I go I see Obama bumper stickers and California plates. They don’t obey the law here either because they are not paying the fee to register their cars in AZ even though they are working here.
Joe is a Republican.
Shadegg won’t challenge McCain but it isn’t because of his House Seat. Remember, Shadegg announced his retirement and had to be talked back into running. He may not run at all in two years.
JD would not even come close in a primary. I like JD but he is a buffoon and he is history.
Well, then... find someone who will challenge him AND can win! Otherwise we have mcCain for life.
There is no one on the political horizon who could possibly beat McCain. This will obviously be his last term. When he retires the seat will likely go Democrat. Flake is a likely heir-apparent on our side but it would be a bruising fight that starts just before the next general.
If I have read Governor Palin correctly, she understands the virtue of gratitude well, and I would not wish her any other way. For whatever mix of reasons, McCain did pick her as VP nominee. Even in spite of his post election behaviour, she will certainly feel an obligation to lend him support. We should remember though that if there is a primary challenge to McCain, Sarah could simply recuse herself on the basis that this is a internal matter for Arisona Republicans to decide without outside interference. If McCain wins the primary, then she can support him against the Democrat. Problem solved.
I’ve emailed him, also. Actually, I’ve emailed everyone at KFYI at some point and always received an answer but none from J. D. Wonder why?
That is the way I hope it will go down here. First we have to find someone to challenge him who can overcome his power here.
Good question. I did see a few articles in December indicating he might run.
That is the fault of the AZ GOP... they have allowed themselves to be manipulated by the Chamber who is manipulated by McCain and no one has been groomed to move up into Shaddegg’s, McCain’s or any other GOP seats here.
We’ll find out in a little over a year.
John McCain is like a cancer on America and the Republican Party. Has he not done enough damage? He needs to go home and play with his grandkids.
IIRC, Checkers (or maybe it was somebody else) had posted photos here that showed Cindy with an incredibly evil glint in her eyes.
Not on my watch...
