Indiscriminate kidnappings. Nearly daily beheadings. Gangs that mock and kill government agents.
This isn't Iraq or Pakistan. It's Mexico, which the U.S. government and a growing number of experts say is becoming one of the world's biggest security risks.
The prospect that America's southern neighbor could melt into lawlessness provides an unexpected challenge to President Obama's government. In its latest report anticipating possible global security risks, the U.S. Joint Forces Command lumps Mexico and Pakistan together as being at risk of a "rapid and sudden collapse."
"The Mexican possibility may seem less likely, but the government, its politicians, police and judicial infrastructure are all under sustained assault and pressure by criminal gangs and drug cartels," the command said in the report, published Nov. 25.
Retiring CIA chief Michael V. Hayden told reporters Friday that Mexico could rank alongside Iran as a challenge for Mr. Obama - perhaps a greater problem than Iraq.
The Justice Department said last month that Mexican gangs are the "biggest organized crime threat to the United States." Outgoing National Security Adviser Stephen J. Hadley said last week that the worsening violence threatens Mexico's democratic form of government.
The alarm is spreading to the private sector as well. Mexico - Latin America's second-biggest economy and the United States' third-biggest oil supplier - is one of the top 10 global risks for 2009 identified by the Eurasia Group, a New York-based consulting firm.

I think hussein and the dims want to make Mexico another state.
“I think hussein and the dims want to make Mexico another state.”
I think hussein, the dims and TOO many republicans want to make the USA another Mexico.
Here’s a good clue.
Trilateralist/CFR Z. Brzezinski discovers Obama at Columbia U.
Obama admin. is advised by Trilat/CFR Z. Brzezinski and Trilat/CFR P. Volker.
Trilat/CFR Robert Pastor (supporter of North American Union) is undoubtedly in the shadows.
laying out the case for a takeover. there is scarcely one place left of Spanish colonial heritage that hasn’t been taken over by the US. Mexico will be no different.
I’ve read several different stories on this situation in the last month or so.
Has the situation all-of-a-sudden gotten noticeably worse, or is it just the new “story du jour” that all the urinalists have to write one story about?
You have struck upon the gem of a brilliant idea. We let all the Mexicans come north, which suits the liberals to a "T", as it gives them an endless supply of victims and welfare cases to vote them into absolute power forever.
We conservatives move south and take over Mexico, establishing our Grand Republic again. We build a GIANT heavily armored border wall to keep the libs out, tweak the good old American Constitution to absolutely preclude socialism in any form, reinforce the Second Amendment to preclude anyone from ever even considering taking our guns, and presto!!!
We live in peace, freedom and happiness again. And the climate is better, if you can stand the heat. Then we'll see once and for all, in a "laboratory setting", which system is the most effective - capitalist or Socialist.
And what is your suggestion? Actually there are only two solutions the first being quick and certain death for those that smuggle drugs. It worked in Singapore but given our legal structure in the United States it would not be swift or certain. Thus it WILL NOT WORK HERE.
The second solution is legalization. The drugs of abuse are actually very cheap to grow and or make. I really do not care if a druggie kills himself with an overdose. In fact I would be somewhat pleased. At least he will not be trying to rob me or my wife for money and putting my wife's life in danger.
If they want help to get off drugs, give it to them. Few will make that choice. If they do not have the money to buy the drugs, give it to them with a clean needle and high purity. They will eventually and quickly remove themselves from the gene pool.
Why should this be a surprise exactly?
LOL! It didn't take him long, did it?
Predictable.
Which 5 or 6 Mexican states are in trouble, so I can see where they are (N or S Mexico)?
see:http://www.fotw.net/flags/mx(.html
Nicely jaded reply from someone who has spent NO time living in Mexico that I know of, and makes it her lifes work to point out every possible disaster-in-waiting related to it. Move to Montana if you hate Mexico so much.
It's tough to argue that the Mexican drug cartels could survive the legalization of drugs in the US.
Our Army may have to go “Truckin’ on down to Taco-Town!”
Those would seem to be the Mexican States with the strongest interaction with the US. Must be W’s fault.
FREE Staters plus Gualt Gulchers.
Ping.
Right! We can't have that!
After all, look at what happened when alcohol was decriminalized.....organized crime was crippled, the government raised more funds, and free Americans had the choice to drink, or not.
How terrible!
;-)
