WASHINGTON (Reuters) – President Barack Obama promised to improve U.S. ties with the Muslim world in his inauguration address on Tuesday, after tensions that followed the September 11 attacks and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
"To the Muslim world, we seek a new way forward, based on mutual interest and mutual respect," said Obama, who became the first black president of the United States.
Obama, a practicing Christian, spent several years of his childhood in Indonesia, the most populous Muslim nation. His American mother, Ann Dunham, married Muslim Indonesian Lolo Soetoro after the end of her marriage to Obama's Kenyan father.
"To those who cling to power through corruption and deceit and the silencing of dissent, know that you are on the wrong side of history; but that we will extend a hand if you are willing to unclench your fist," Obama said.

That is the trademark of Democrats and other Totalitarians, such as Radical Islamists. Orwellian.
It sure didn’t take him long to sell us out.
So now concerted Arab oil money has bought the Islamists a compliant US president as well as a secretary of state who’s husband has a library well funded by “questionable” Arab “businessmen”, just like that traitor Carter. I smell a Muslim rat’s bribery whenever I hear treasonous comments come from either a politician or a media stooge.
Except that muslims are allowed to lie to infidels to further the cause of islam.
The muzzies will understand his apparent defection from islam.
So all he has to do is bide his time and have a reconversion.
In this order: Christians, Muslims, Jews, and Hindus.
That's right. Muslims ranked higher than Jews.
In America, where Jews have been for many, many years and have succeeded in so many fields and achieved the American dream and more importantly have not conspired to bring America to its knees.
And B. Hussein Obama lists the Muslims - not only a minority but a hostile minority - ahead of the Jewish people.

It would have made me sick, though.
I have no doubt that he is a closet muslim, just waiting for the right opportunity to come out.
Comrade Obama will continue to sell us out every chance he gets. We need to steel ourselves against the global jihad. Obama wants to soften us up. Following him is suicidal.
He will maintain the clean cut, non-confrontational, non-incendiary, occasionally rebuking (of his street crew) persona. But the agenda will go forth nonetheless.
Either America is so clueless or their hatred of Bush pushed them to elect the anti-Bush......I don't know.
But to think we have been battling Muslims for 7 years and we have elected someone with a turbo leftist voting background, a Muslim social background with the name Hussein, who associates with many anti-American types is astounding to me.
Well, no, he's not. Has he even been baptized? I doubt it.
And yet, he's poised to sign the most sweeping pro-abortion legislation in American history, if it passes Congress. Considering the Muslims hate us already, how will making legal one of the procedures they consider heinous help relations?
I watched an interview with O a few months ago, where he was being asked some very probing questions about his faith.
Being a Christian myself, I listened intently to his answers concerning his faith; and when asked about eternal salvation, his reply was that he didn't believe in life after death.
The fundamental teaching of Christianity is that there is indeed life after death, and that without acceptance of Jesus as GOD'S Savior; there is no Christian faith.
I knew then that his profession of faith in Christ was a ruse.
Kinda makes one wonder about all the so called called Christians who voted for him.
It makes me sick that he managed to mention them period.
But I'm not surprised!
They are burning his picture in Tehran that’s a good start.
