Nicaragua: Sandinista Mob Attacks Opposition Mayors, Councilmen

(Abridged English-language translation)

While President Daniel Ortega asked last night "to eradicate violence as a method of struggle", hundreds of Sandinista followers who attended the swearing-in of municipal officials held at Plaza de la República became violent towards the liberals who were protesting against election fraud.

Ten minutes had barely passed after Ortega asked to eliminate violence in Nicaragua when a large Sandinista mob attacked mayors and [municipal] councilmen with the [opposition] Liberal Constitutionalist Party (PLC) who came to be sworn in by the Supreme Electoral Council (CSE).

Once Ortega's speech ended, the Sandinistas attempted to lynch PLC Managua councilman Virgilio Gurdián as he was making statements to the media.

Amid a shower of water balloons and stones thrown by the Sandinistas, Gurdián was quickly taken to the premises of the Chancery of the Republic, where several troublemakers arrived and tried to knock down the gate to that state institution.

"Go away, crooks!" the mob yelled while they followed Gurdián from the old Cine González to the Chancery.

In addition of driving the liberal councilman away from the square premises, the Sandinistas also yelled for the mayors, vice-mayors, and councilmen with the opposition party to leave the place, even though they had not even received their credentials from the election authorities.

Before the altercation, Gurdián stated that, at the last minute, PLC leaders notified them that the mayors, vice-mayors, and councilmen should participate in the event because they had been legitimately elected.

"We come to represent all our brothers whose right to be elected was usurped in one of the most scandalous frauds that have been perpetrated in Nicaragua," he added.

Gurdián blamed the CSE for the acts of aggression against members of his party by turning the inauguration into an act where state-party confusion was evident.

Horrible.

the liberals who were protesting against election fraud

Readers who see this and may not understand should know that "liberal" refers to what we call conservatives, that is, persons who subscribe to liberal economic theory, believing in the free market.
