Barack Obama to end US army's 'don't ask, don't tell' policy towards gays
The Telegraph (UK) ^ | January 14, 2009 | Alex Spillius

The move is expected to be among a series of symbolic changes he will push through quickly to stamp his mark on the presidency.

He is also expected to reverse several controversial executive Bush decisions within days of taking office next week.

Mr Obama has committed to closing the US military prison at Guantanamo Bay and will formally ban all interrogative techniques that could be described as torture, such as waterboarding.

It is expected that he will also reverse Mr Bush's orders restricting the distribution of funds for stem cell research and to overseas groups that offer abortion counselling.

The change of policy on homosexuality will allow gays to serve openly in all branches of the armed forces.

...

Although introduced before he came to power, Mr Bush's refusal to change the "don't ask, don't tell" policy angered many in America.

...Colin Powell, the former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, is among influential figures who have called for the policy to be re-evaluated.

During his campaign Mr Obama often spoke out against what he called Bush's abuse of executive authority.

"I was a constitutional law professor, which means unlike the current president, I actually respect the Constitution," he said in 2007. ...

Obama’s a liar.

I can tell you .. our manly military will get out of the military as fast as they can if this issue goes forth. That’s going to leave us protected by a bunch of wimps who are afraid of their own shadow. That’s just great!!

There is NOTHING IN THE CONSTITUTION which says gays have to be given any special kind of treatment or priviledge .. and I’m sick already of the double standard.

I bet even the Brits think Obama’s nuts doing this. We will be the only Western military force accepting open homosexuals. They will ruin the military just like they’re ruining our schools, our colleges, our churches and our synagogues.

We will all be paying for this mistake by Obama for a long time just as we will be paying for the economic recession/depression he caused and all the other ways he is seeking to destroy America.

Barack: This is case of ‘don’t tear down a fence before you understand why it was put up in the first place’.

He and his latte sippin’ friends have no idea.

Obama is just trying to please his gay voters.

But his gay voters better remember that he also has to please his black voters.

Look for the small print: All gay military personnel will be required to wear lavender uniforms, especially whilst overseas fighting radial Muslim fanatics.

Not saying they are correct, but they are currently serving.

The military is but a reflection of society and look at where society is right now when it comes to gays. Every year more and more Fortune 500 companies extend benefits to domestic partners. Discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation is prohibited in practically every environment. Young recruits today, the E-7s and O-5s of tomorrow, have been raised in a culture of acceptance where they've seen friends, family members and co-workers come out of the closet to little fanfare.

We knew Obama would change the policy. This isn't coming as a big surprise to anyone currently serving. In many commands, gays have been more or less out of the closet for a while now. Every command has gays and everyone knows who they are. Most simply don't care anymore these days.

0bama was a lecturer, not a professor. I pity the students who had to listen to him stammer through a lecture.

Candidly, I’m not concerned about gay men and women serving and doing their jobs rather I’m concerned about the typical pattern of the homosexual ‘activists’ disrupting a traditional requirement of trust, respect, loyalty and patriotism.

Does anyone actually think the Manchild is some sort of brilliant, respected legal mind?

Apparently his ego allows him to do so.

How do you give a security clearance to someone who has promiscuous sex with multiple, strange partners, uses recreational drugs as part of his sexuality, and despises Western civilization as a matter of political doctrine?

Lavender? The lesbian Boatswain Mates I've gone to sea with are more comfortable in flight deck jerseys and steel-toed boots.

You do realize that when we talk about "gays in the military" we're mostly talking about lesbians, right? Everybody has framed this debate around prancing, effeminate men while the truth is that the majority of gays serving are actually lesbians.

I hope the generals are prepping their plans to deal with a 10% reduction in troops because of this policy changing.

Let's not forget the reduction in the recruiting levels as well.

Maybe, this will force Obama and the Democrats to bring back the draft.

I think the Brits got done in on this subject in 1999 by the EU...:^)

I had read a 60% reduction in troops. Didn’t Clinton try this, and it was a disaster?
