Obama to end military's ban on homosexuals, spokesman says'
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | January 14, 2009 | Matthew B. Stanhard

President Obama will end the 15-year-old "don't ask, don't tell" policy that has prevented homosexual and bisexual men and women from serving openly within the U.S. military, a spokesman for the president-elect said.

Obama said during the campaign that he opposed the policy, but since his election in November has made statements that have been interpreted as backpedaling. On Friday, however, Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs, responding on the transition team's Web site to a Michigan resident who asked if the new administration planned to get rid of the policy, said:

"You don't hear politicians give a one-word answer much. But it's 'Yes'."

The little-noticed response, made in a video posted on change.gov, made barely a ripple outside blogs focused on the gay community, but that's not surprising, said those who have been pushing to overturn the ban. Not only was Obama's position expected, they said, but support for reviewing or repealing the policy has grown markedly in recent years, including from some unexpected quarters.

The end of "don't ask, don't tell" may not happen immediately, several critics of the policy said. Although they appreciate clarity from Obama on the issue, they anticipate that the demands of the economy and two wars are likely to trump a speedy policy reversal.

"The question isn't if we do it and the question isn't when we do it, it's how we do it," said Rep. Ellen Tauscher, D-Walnut Creek, whose 2006 bill to repeal the ban earned broad support among Democrats in Congress but did not move forward in the face of a near-certain veto by President Bush.

"I'm going to reintroduce the bill in the next few weeks," Tauscher said. "We've got the American people behind us."

Too bad illegal immigration was not an issue. I guess the GOP wanted to really win the Hispanic vote...oops on that one.

If I were in a foxhole and the enemy was firing on me, I wouldn't give a crap if the guy next to me liked water buffalos. As long as he could do his job and get us out of there alive. Having said that, the whole thought of this and this entire thread makes me want to puke. I have to post this pic so that it's the last thing on my mind before I go to sleep. I want to have pleasant dreams :-)

Good night all.

I’m still stuck on the lesbian part. And the other statement about homosexuals being normal and how we don’t need to feel uncomfortable around them in the shower, etc.

Don’t forget the first Immigration Reform bill, courtesy of Ted Kennedy, back in the mid 60s.

You got banned for honesty? Ridiculous.

Too many still stuck on white guilt. We’re supposed to ignore demographics and culture (and of course cultural diversity as long as white/european culture isn’t included).

“Just watch the military recruitment numbers plummet, like the stock markt.”

And then the Dems will re-institute the draft. Young people will no longer voluntarily serve with sodomites; they will be forced to serve with sodomites.

When the draft is re-instituted (no, not IF; it is WHEN), our daughters too will begin getting draft notices. They will want our daughters forced in to barracks with lesbians. It IS coming.

My two elder daughters are at or past the close of draft age under current law. But I still have two younger daughters who would be effected. (And I also have a teen age son at home)

We are already in regular correspondence with our elected representatives about these matters.

Part of our probelm as conservatives is that we wait until the problems reach critical mass before we start writing our letters. If we have forsight and can see where things are headed, we might complain on sights such as this, but we are rarely active with our elected representatives on the issues.

We have been writing letters about our objections to military conscription since 1995. People have scorned and laughed and said, “There is no draft and there won’t be.”

Folks, when voluntary recruitment plummets because young people don’t want to serve or live with the sodomite perverts, the DEMS will draft. They are going to bring about a military crisis and conflict, and will need the bodies.

The letters had better begin flying to our elected reps on every level from all of us. And include the Department of Defense in your list, along with the secretaries of each branch of the armed forces, thee Joint Chiefs, and the Selective Service Administration.

Spread the rage!

Thanks, Enchante, for the correction.

I read “The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich” way back in the sixties and time does have a tendency to make facts run together, such as SS and SA.

What I was trying to demonstrate was that Obama’s throwing close associates under the bus when they become inconvenient is typical of certain tyrannical types of personalities. No one and no group in this nation will have any rights save Obama. Notice how he made nicey with certain conservative pundits at a dinner last night?

I know some CO’s who support getting rid of the ban for that very reason. Unfortunately, there are other problems that would cause that no one wants to talk about.

I will refuse to attend any training sessions that try to teach us to be tolerant of gays. It is against my religion.

You are correct about making a mistake in FR. I check before I post. Read Genesis 18:22-33. In my KJV, the Lord is talking to Abraham.

I can imagine the outrage once they start forcing people to live next to “married” gay couples in base housing. Good gravy, am I ever glad we bought a house finally.

The average man goes into the communal showers to get clean, the average homo goes into the communal showers to get down and dirty, the average man goes into the restroom to take care of business and leave, the average homo goes into the restroom to take care of business and stay.

I spent most of my USAF career in either Special Ops or Missiles. It wasn’t all air-conditioned O’Clubs and cable TV. I know what up close and personal military action is like.

In the missile community, there was the same hysteria when launch crews were integrated. Spending 24 hours locked in an underground capsule with a person of the opposite sex was thought to be an open invitation to sex orgies, rape and perversion. It never developed into a significant problem.

It was rather obvious before the elections that he will do such shamefull things BUT I STRONGLY REGRET that neither McCAIN nor S.PALIN really slamed him on that issue

If you have no problem sleeping and living in very close quarters with someone who might find you sexually attractive, that’s your business.

I did it for weeks at a time in the 80's. My bunk was between two women in the GP Medium tent we called home. Neither of them came over to snuggle up, and sex was the last thing on my mind in 100+ degree heat, dust and rain. Why should it be any different with someone of the same sex?
