Shocking cold wave drops temps to 40 below zero (darn that global warming)

MINNEAPOLIS – Temperatures crashed to Arctic levels Tuesday as a severe cold wave rolled across the upper Midwest on the heels of yet another snowstorm, closing schools and making most people think twice before going outside. Early Wednesday, the cold front swept into New York, sending temperatures falling from the 30s a day before to single digits or below zero. It hit 8 below in Massena, on the St. Lawrence River in northern New York, with the wind chill making it feel like minus 25 degrees.

Check this one out. Crane Lake Minnesota. They bottomed out this morning at - 41.8 F. There previous record for this date was - 14.0 F in 1998. They beat their record for this date by 27.8 F degrees.

I would say that is probably a new station. There is no way -14F would be a record if records had been kept at that location for the last 100+ years.

For the rest of you (and I see this tripe every time it gets cold)...Isolated arctic air intrusions do not discount global warming. Even in the warmest of years in the 1997-1998 years...it got COLD in the winter time. What discounts global warming is the long-term climate averages falling. So...stop acting all silly every time an arctic airmass breaks off from the Yukon. It gets cold in Canada this time of year and it heads south...even IF the plant was warming it would still do that. Otherwise...when places start setting record highs during the winter...you will be forced to accept global warming using the same logic.

You can't have your cake and eat it too.

Well, hopefully he’s not giving a GW speech there, because then it’ll snow there too.

Now’s a good time to check on the senior citizens you might know.

Make sure they stay inside.

That was just a worse case example. There was numerous records broken this morning. Some daily records are falling in Canada too. More to follow this week.

What discounts global warming is the long-term climate averages falling.

So how many people must die before you admit you are wrong ?

Flu and winter freeze set to kill thousands

I remember back in the 70s, we would get a few days/nights every winter where the temps got down to about -25 F (in Illinois). It’s been awhile since we’ve had that, but it’s not unheard of.

I remember -25 in the 70’s on a regular basis in MN...and then in Illinois....also in the 70’s....

;-)

I really hated the ice storms in East-Central Illinois. Couldn’t get to the gas cap behind the license plate on the ‘74 Impala....

So how many people must die before you admit you are wrong ?

Huh? That is kind of a non-sense statement. There is nothing that I said in there that was wrong.

Maybe you should go back and re-read the post. The point I was making (to others, which was pointed out), was that a few cold snaps...or even a few record cold events do not discount global warming. In 1998-2000...during the actual warmest period...there were still record cold events. There were still stations that set a record low. One cold snap doesn't discount global warming because cold snaps will happen even in a period of global warming.

NOW LISTEN CAREFULLY...what I said was what discounts (notice the tense of the verb...not hypothetical...but presented as a fact....which relays my position on the subject...and as a 22 year meteorologist...I am somewhat of an expert on climate) global warming is the long-term averages....not short term events.

If a short term event defined what was happening long term...then during periods of record warmth (even during winter)...using the same logic...one would have to conclude the world is warming. Since long-term averages show temps slowly decreasing again...even events of record warmth are meaningless.

The climate is not a snapshot...it is a long-term average. Stop pointing to record cold events during winter as "evidence" of global cooling...or you are forced to accept the same "evidence" from the left during record warm events for the same period.

We had a morning when it hit 37 below zero in central Vermont back in the late 90’s...this is just a cold snap like many that have gone before. Nothing more, nothing less.
