WASHINGTON – Every president leaves unfinished business. For George W. Bush, the list includes two wars and the war on terror, saving Social Security, establishing an enduring Republican majority, and much, much more. In some cases, like immigration reform, he concedes tactical miscalculations. Mostly, though, Bush maintains that he did his best and did the right thing, even when it cost him. "I know this, that I never sold my soul for the sake of approval ratings, which matter not one whit to me. Evidently they do to a lot of other people, but not to me," he told The Dallas Morning News last week. "What matters most is the principles that you adhere to in life, particularly if you're the president of the United States." It's a certitude his fans admire and detractors find maddening. As Bush reviewed his tenure the other day in the Oval Office, he projected confidence that history will judge him more generously than his contemporaries. But for now, the country is clearly ready to move on. Barack Obama's inauguration in nine days will draw record throngs. Millions are counting on him to dismantle the legacy of cowboy diplomacy, to mop up after Bush's recession and end the wars he started. Bush wishes him the best. He hosted Obama and the three living former presidents for lunch last week to usher his successor into their elite fellowship. But Obama's victory represented a sharp turn, in both style and substance. The country's unease with the outgoing president stands at odds with Bush's own assessment of his performance.

I voted for him and would do it again, but the past couple of years he seemed to have lost his mind and was a huge disappointment. I blame him for what we have getting ready to take over in 10 days. His bailouts were nothing short of criminal. President Bush, I can’t figure you out but I do know you greatly disappointed me and I’m not sure I can forgive.
Mr. Todd J. Gillman, author of this piece of trash, failed to accuse President Bush of kicking puppies and using foul language in front of nuns. How can he call himself an objective journalist while leaving out these obvious well known facts? Doesn’t this guy watch TV news?

Who the heck ever did any such thing? Not Reagan. Maybe Lincoln, but he had to almost literally fight a war against the Democratic party to achieve it.
I think history ought to record that Bush’s failures, with the exception of Harriet Meirs (or however you spell her name) wer all and without exception Big Government debacles. The bail-outs being the worst offense of all, to my mind. Iraq and Afghanistan are yet to be decided, but let it be remembered that war is the biggest government project of all.
Also, I think history ought to record that Bush’s scandals were the lamest of the past fifty years. Valerie Plame? Her outing wasn’t a crime. “Bush Lied, People Died”? That was the longest and most tedious “rush to war” ever. Plus, the Democrats, over a hundred other nations, and nearly the U.N. went along with it. Katrina? Louisiana’s responsibility.
His biggest flaw: he was too much of a gentleman. He let his political adversaries' slanderous attacks on his character go unanswered, trying to be "above the fray." Instead, he allowed them to define him. He should have better utilized the bully pulpit to sock the whining sissies right in the nose. He should have exposed them for the cowards they are and left them feeling humiliated. He lost the PR war, and in this day and age, PR is everything in politics.

Count me as grateful for the security we felt with him at the helm & the example of honor, love & respect he showed to not only the wife, family & loved ones BUT the adversaries on the homefront

I do think his biggest failure has been communcation and failure to defend what he has done. Failure to pin the blame on the donkeys for the economy for what they did. It was NOT his policies that gave us this recession. But you would never know it. Failure to defend folks on the whole Plame scandal.
I only wish he could communicate better so folks would know he really was a good, decent president.

Besides, I wouldn't hang his legacy on just those two guys.
He has kept us safe for 8 years and I am very grateful for that.

The author is a terrorist sympathizer. The war in Afganistan was started by al-Qaeda attacking America on 9-11, not to mention all of the other al-Qaeda attacks. The war in Iraq was started by Saddam’s refusal to comply with the cease fire conditions. I bet this author believes the war in Gaza was started by Israel.
