LOL.....that seems to be the only way I learn!

Sorry that happened to you.

I lost the better part of 250 gigs a few weeks ago. I think I was able to retrieve most if not all of it.

Presents
Drumbo's Story Corner

During his life, Robert A. Heinlein won Hugo Awards for four of his novels: Double Star (1956), Starship Troopers (1960), Stranger in a Strange Land (1962), and The Moon is a Harsh Mistress (1967). In addition, fifty years after publication, three other Heinlein novels were awarded "Retro Hugos" bringing his total to an unprecedented seven. The award is named after Hugo Gernsback, the founder of the pioneering science fiction magazine Amazing Stories. Hugo Awards have been presented every year since 1955. Heinlein was awarded the Sequoya Award, voted by the children of Oklahoma, for Have Space Suit - Will Travel as the best young person's novel of 1958. Heinlein was also presented the very first "Grand Master Nebula Award" given by the Science Fiction Writers of America for his lifetime achievement, in addition to multiple "Nova" awards for his short stories. Indeed, the man who during his life was known as "The Dean of Science Fiction" is now and forever, reverently known simply as "The Grand Master".

He sat beside Walter Cronkite as special guest commentator during the first Moon landing. Excerpts of his stories have been read and broadcast from space by several teams of astronauts who gave him credit for their interest in space. A major crater on the face of the moon is named for him. He testified as an expert wittiness before joint sessions of the House and he participated in Ronald Regan's Citizens Advisory Council on National Space Policy discussing the Strategic Defense Initiative ("Star Wars").

In 1988, Heinlein was posthumously awarded NASA's Medal for Distinguished Public Service, the space agency's highest civilian award. His wife, Virginia Heinlein endowed the Robert Anson Heinlein Chair in Aerospace Engineering, established in 2001, at Annapolis, by a gift of over $2.6 million, in honor of her late husband, a graduate of the Naval Academy's Class of 1929. She also helped to found The Heinlein Society, an educational charity dedicated to paying forward to generations to come the many Heinlein legacies and she also endowed the public library in Robert Heinlein's birthplace of Butler, Missouri.

Heinlein's fiction led to the invention of the water bed, the robotic arm (he coined the phrase "Waldo") as well as the "Powered Armor Suit" under development for our military. Beyond being a brilliant and influential writer, Heinlein was a visionary, a scientist, a military strategist, a patriot and a civil humanitarian responsible for blood drives that continue under his name to this day.

Heinlein's archive is housed by the Special Collections department of the University Library of the University of California at Santa Cruz. The collection includes manuscript drafts, correspondence, photographs and artifacts. A substantial portion of the archive has been digitized and is available on-line through the Robert A. and Virginia Heinlein Archives.

You can read more about this remarkable man at The Heinlein Society, Wikipedia or, you can learn most anything about him right here on Free Republic:

I suppose one day we'll get around to starting a Heinlein ping list here on FR. There's no hurry though, we'll still be talking about him in a hundred years ... and in a thousand.

This week, Drumbo's Story Corner presents the audio book Double Star, the novel that won Heinlein his first Hugo award. It was first serialized in Astounding Science Fiction (February, March, April 1956) and published in hardcover the same year. It has been in perpetual publication ever since.

Double Star is told in the first person and centers on a down-and-out actor, Lawrence Smith (stage name Lorenzo Smythe, a.k.a. "The Great Lorenzo"). A brilliant actor and mimic, he is down to his last coin when a spaceman hires him to double for a public figure. It is only when he is on his way to Mars that he finds out how deeply he has been deceived: he will have to impersonate one of the most prominent politicians in the solar system (and one with whose views Smythe deeply disagrees)—John Joseph Bonforte, leader of the Expansionist coalition, currently in opposition but with a good chance of taking power at the next general election.

A delightful romp through the worlds of politics, interplanetary relations, espionage, space travel and show business, Double Star is as relevant, entertaining and and prophetic as it was in the Golden Age of Science Fiction when it helped revolutionize the genre from creepy-crawly space opera to intellectual and philosophical literature.

The 159 page book, is read by Lloyd James and it's six segments run just under six hours in it's entirety.

I now have a battery backup that will run up to 70 minutes in case of a power failure.

I don’t want to have to go through that again!
