Kennedy seen as model for re-entry women
Associated Press ^ | January 8, 2009 | KAREN MATTHEWS

With her Camelot pedigree and Park Avenue address, Caroline Kennedy is not exactly the average American woman. But many women identify with her impulse to enter the work force after two decades of child rearing.

Kennedy's bid for the Senate has reignited the "mommy wars" between mothers with careers and those who take a break from paid employment. Like Kennedy, many women face resentment when they return to the work force after raising kids and doing volunteer work.

"She's a Kennedy, but she's a lot like us," was the headline of a Dec. 28 column by Anne Glusker in The Washington Post. "If you strip away the glamour, the name and the money, then Caroline is ... me. And many of my friends."

Kennedy, 51, graduated from Columbia Law School but never practiced law. She raised three children, wrote and edited several books, served on the boards of public service organizations and worked as the unpaid chief of fundraising for the New York City schools.

Now that Kennedy's three children are adults or nearly so, she is opting to get back onto the career track, though on a much grander scale than most women.

Some experts who study women's careers see Kennedy as a potential model for women without her connections.

"My research shows that almost 40 percent of women do take an off ramp and do all kinds of things in the private sphere, whether it's saving the wetlands or running the PTA," said Sylvia Ann Hewlett, president of the Center for Work-Life Policy and the author of "Off Ramps and On Ramps: Keeping Talented Women on the Road to Success." "But none of that gives them much credit in the world of work."

Critics of Kennedy's sudden interest in the Senate see a dilettante with a

LOL...I hope there is a stylist on that boat. Girlfriend needs one.

Now that I have read this thread, I can’t get Rush’s ‘Feed Caroline’ out of my head.

Nita Lowey (my congresswoman) is the bride of Satan. I would definitely rather be represented by Nancy Pelosi or Barney Frank. The thought of her as my senator makes me cross myself involuntarily. In short, Kennedy is a much better choice. BTW, if Nita just turned 70. If she can only hang on a couple more terms or so, we here in Westchester are already looking forward to Chelsea Clinton.

Sorry, ma, but I’ve been calling Maria (shriver kennedy) Schwarzenegger “Skeletor” for years ... it’s sort of amusing that another kennedy chick is also a Skeletor.

I was a Girl Scout cookie mom...so I should be able to take over Apple right? I mean I’m obviously qualified (except for the name recognition.)

They don’t age well as a family. Yet they have the resources to age well. I don’t get it.

The cousin who runs the Citgo thing...he can’t talk either. Didn’t all the Kennedys wind up with Ivy League educations?

More importantly, how does one re-enter where they have never been?

Probably ... but there's a Fundamental Principle of the Universe that applies here: You can't polish a turd.

I heard that there might be a few CEO positions in the American auto and finance industries. Maybe we stay at home moms should get back in the workforce. After all we have spent our “non-working” lives cleaning up after other people....

She looks like she should be John Kerry’s daughter (hey, did you know he was in Vietnam??).

Lurch and lurchette. She walks like she has gum on her shoes.

Actually, the Skeletor moniker has (rightfully) been assigned...

Every time I see Michael Chertoff, Director of Homeland Security, I see Skeletor.

"glamour" and "beauty" are not the same thing. Glamour is an illusion and the term comes from the old English that referred to a glamour as being a false image of beauty or greatness and that image being created by witchcraft.

Given that definition, the libs are bewitched by this person whom another FReeper so adroitly called 'Skeletor'.

I hate “re-entry” women. They decide not to get a job, then decide they want to work clogging up the market and preventing young adults from getting a position from which they can pursue a career.

I can’t count the amount of times I went searching for a position as a receptionist and always saw this huge housefrau already there, merrily typing away as I’m told I don’t have enough previous experience.

Flame away, but it just burns.

That huge housefrau is not percieved to be a threat to the owner’s/boss’ wife.
