WASHINGTON -- Roland Burris headed to Capitol Hill Tuesday to demand a seat in the 111th Congress, insisting that if he isn't allowed to take the oath of office as the next senator from Illinois, the Senate could have a lawsuit on its hands.
Participating in the theatrics, Burris was greeted by Sergeant at Arms Terrance Gainer, a door-keeper and an official from Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's office before going to the appointment desk on the third floor and to the secretary of the Senate. There, his credentials were denied.
Burris was appointed by Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, who was arrested last month and accused of trying to sell the vacated U.S. Senate seat previously held by President-elect Barack Obama.

How quickly we forget who the democrats are.
The man accepted an appointment from a thoroughly corrupt governor to feed his own selfish egotistical appetite when he very well knew that no one wanted Blago to fill that Senate position. I can't feel bad for a man that exhibits such questionable character traits.
Pretty clear they would have to create and pass a law first to have power to turn away Burris.
Actually, no - this only gives Congress the power to determine the time, place, and manner of holding elections for senators, and it does not grant power over state appointments to fill vacancies.
I find it ironic Senator Reid is doing what Brago tried to do......Control who gets the seat.
Exactly. And the State of Illinois complied with that provisio in the 17th Amendment by passing 10 ILCS 5/25-8 (see post 51). Burris will win, unless he’s playing for something else.
And they gave themselves a raise.
That's true of just about any politician. But unlike the others, at least this guy realizes he's mortal. That's somewhat refreshing. ;~))
Please pass the popcorn, the 4 year long show is about to begin. LOL
The thing about Roland Burris is that -- he covets that senate seat. And he's coveted it since he lost in the 1984 election. With Blago offering it to Burris it's like a drug pusher always keeping that bag of heroin just out of the junkies reach. Its all sooooooooo close you but you just can't have it.
So this move by Blago was extremely devious. He knew what Burris' reaction would be and that he'd do everything to be seated. No mater what the consequences were for all involved. Including creating a Constitutional crisis and a Judicial showdown.
I'd bet that right now Blago is sitting back LHAO. He's like the kid who loved pulling wings off flies and torturing small animals to see the reaction.
Blago is a megalomaniac(1) and a psychopath(2).
As far as I know, Burris paid for his tombstone out his own funds. It’s his money, he can do what he wants with.
This is so different then the usuall Dim who builds a monument with gov money. For example, Todd Stroger Sr. building the new Cook County hospital and naming it after himself. Or Robert K.K.K. Bird naming every damn, road or truckstop after him in West Virginia.
George Wallace - Democrat
Orville Faubus - Democrat
Eugene (Bull) Conner - Democrat
Harry Reid - Democrat
Does anyone see a pattern?
Good point.
Peanuts are fatal to some people. Does that make Jimmy Carter a merchant of death?
But peanuts are good monkey food and should be on every desk in congress. It’s the PT Barnum, Reid and Pelousey Circus!
Interesting. That muddies the water a bit. Looks like this’ll end up at the SCOTUS.
Yeah, it ain’t over until the guy with the weird haircut sings.
Congressman Billybob posted on that a week ago. Powell won election to the seat and the House refused to seat him. He sued, won and took his seat. Congress immediately voted to expel him by the required 2/3 majority. Powell went off to Bimini. Burris case could be the same sequence of events if 7 or 8 Republican votes cand be mustered.
I disagree... I think Blago is a guy who won’t be thrown under the bus... It also seems like people are trying to paint him as a psycho and megalomaniac... He may have an inflated ego... but in my opinion he’s not crazy.
That pattern goes back to pre civil war, civil war and post civil war.
One of the biggest lies the MSM has foisted is their party is not racists and republicans are.
In Powell they tried to exclude a fairly elected person because of that person's actions (well, supposedly fairly, this was the New Yord Democrat machine). Here could exclude a person based on the appointment itself being tainted using their role as the judge of elections. I think that's a big difference the Supreme Court would notice.
As far as I can tell,
Blago has not been indicted, nor impeached, and has really committed no prosecutable crime.
He acted within his powers as governor and appointed Burris.
There is no legal reason this guy should be excluded.
