I always thought the Masons were a very conservative, very white group.
“I always thought the Masons were a very conservative, very white group.”
Yes, I did to, until I did some research for a book. The Cherokee had lodges in Indian Territory/Arkansas in the 1850’s-60’s and after. Blacks in the area also had lodges.
Very conservative, yes. White, no.
My lodge (not Prince Hall) has black, white, hispanic, one Asian doctor who doesn’t show up, Jewish, Roman Catholic and every protestant denomination around.
Very conservative when it comes to individual values but as you know, many people live conservative values but vote liberal. I wouldn't call the lodges 'very white', very diverse and one of the first fraternal groups to welcome members no matter their racial background.
Shows that widely-held perceptions can be quite wrong.
Many "minorities" are members and for a fact, my BIL always supports DEMONCRATS.
There are no racial qualifications/discriminations in Free Masonry.
