Motorists' habits spur call for tax increases

By JOAN LOWY
Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - Motorists are driving less and buying less gasoline, which means fuel taxes aren't raising enough money to keep pace with the cost of road, bridge and transit programs.

A federal commission created by Congress to find a way to make up the growing revenue shortfall in the program that funds highway repairs and construction is talking about increasing federal gas and diesel taxes...

... The 15-member National Commission on Surface Transportation Infrastructure Financing is the second group in a year to call for increasing the current 18.4 cents a gallon federal tax on gasoline and the 24.4 cents a gallon tax on diesel. State fuel taxes vary from state to state.

Absolutely..

...even a small change, like having to produce a tax return showing that you actually paid some taxes, would help the situation out a lot.

People who have no stake in the country have no respect for the country.....

...and as I speak, Al Franken is about to be named Senator....the Senate has about hit the bottom of the intellegence scale....it can't possible get any dumber...

Yeah, Al Franken is stealing the election. He might be a mediocre actor, but he’s about as funny as stepping on a land mine.

I haven't had time to read all the responses carefully, but it seems to me that no one had zeroed in on the worst aspect of this article; the technique being used to introduce the knife before the taxpayer realize who is responsible for the rape.

I will expand on this as soon as I have the time to do a proper job. Bottom line, the politicians are fat, dumb and happy, enjoying life and their latest pay raises and improved perks, while the heavy lifting is being done by faceless, unaccountable members of a commission who shall all remain faceless, anonymous and beyond reach.

Who, us?

Less driving will put less wear and tear on the roads and the government will spend less on upkeep. Right?

maintenance, repairs and upkeep on roads and infrastructure should be less if people are using them less.
