Robyn Paul, her husband and their three children look like the classic American family -- until you find out that Tiernan, their kindergartner, is still breast-feeding.
Many people are shocked by the idea of nursing a child who is nearly 6 years old, but Paul remains determined to do what she says is best for her child.
"In this culture, breasts are viewed as sexual," Paul said. "We use breasts to sell everything from beer to motorcycles, then a toddler is in mom's arms nursing for what they're supposed to be used for and everybody freaks out."
...
Paul said she usually breast-feeds Tiernan at home when he needs comforting.
"They're running around and playing," she said. "Once they get beyond 3 years old they're not nursing but a couple of times a day."
Although some might consider a pacifier a more socially acceptable way to comfort their child, Paul said she would prefer that her child receive comfort at her breast.
When Tiernan needs comforting, he will ask his mother for "nummies," his word for breast-feeding, Paul said. "We've had conversations about what it tastes like and he says it's very sweet," like vanilla ice cream, Paul said.
She is happy with the choice she made, she said, but she would never force it on somebody else.
"All I'm trying to do is let people know that it does happen, that it is perfectly normal," she said.

...some French dude.
And here I thought it was someone groping for answers.
There's no reason a child of this age needs to be nursing from a breast - or a bottle. It is obviously not for nutritional sustenance. In underdeveloped countries where food is scarce, you might make a case for it.
Most kids do not remember when they gave up the breast or bottle. This kid sure will.
Sick.
......................................................................................................OK, now I get it. You are so punny!
I don’t think it’s sexual abuse. But I think mom’s getting a thrill out of her maternal power and her need to be needed.
So what?
The world is going to H*** in a handcart, and we choose to focus upon a mother, who chooses to nurse her child.
None of my business.
Is it yours?
Six year old children should need neither a pacifier nor a breast.
This brain-damaged woman is crippling her child. As somebody else pointed out, if this kid doesn’t become a shut-in playing whatever version of World of Warcraft is out in ten years, he’s going to lose every date he ever comes close to getting as soon as the girl searches his name and finds out he was still attached to the teat at 6.
<<< Its cows milk that is unnatural, except for calves.>>>
Total BS! My mother was giving me cow’s milk straight from the cow when I was 3 months old! My relatives in North Wales had a farm and my parents used to take me there for their leisure time and peace and quiet.
I’m now 60 yrs old. Enough said!
Nothing like pulling statements out of that thing you sit on and trying to pass them off as fact. LOL
The sweet taste of suckcest.
Most women can produce milk as long as it is being used. It normally will not dry up until the child is no longer nursing.
Cow’s milk is actually quite close in its nutritional balance to human milk. It’s not just an arbitrary choice.
That said, there is something to be said for the fact that only humans drink milk after they are weaned. I believe it’s largely unnecessary.
No one can argue with the mamma's boy label for sure!!! LOL
Definitely not the norm. In my opinion, this has not been in the child’s best interest. 6 months to a year seems to be the norm in today’s times.
This got me thinking that perhaps the ancients nursed a long time, but then, probably not since they had baby after baby. A new baby had to be the natural cut off time for the last one nursing. Plus, mom didn’t have time to deal with nursing for years and years. So, my guess is that, out of necessity, long-term nursing was probably never the norm in any society. And, when and if it happened, the child would have to be an only child or the last one.
Nutrition has nothing to do with this. She states herself that it is to comfort him. Now at the age of 6, most kids should be able to find other ways to comfort. Myself, I sucked on a bottle til I was 5. My mothers friends all begged her to please, TAKE IT AWAY, what are you going to do when she starts school? If a kid needs moms lap, that’s one thing, but this is all about her.
I don't think the OREO people would agree.
I'm talking about THE very first time...

Someone here is pathologically needy, and it’s not the kid!
