Robyn Paul, her husband and their three children look like the classic American family -- until you find out that Tiernan, their kindergartner, is still breast-feeding.
Many people are shocked by the idea of nursing a child who is nearly 6 years old, but Paul remains determined to do what she says is best for her child.
"In this culture, breasts are viewed as sexual," Paul said. "We use breasts to sell everything from beer to motorcycles, then a toddler is in mom's arms nursing for what they're supposed to be used for and everybody freaks out."
...
Paul said she usually breast-feeds Tiernan at home when he needs comforting.
"They're running around and playing," she said. "Once they get beyond 3 years old they're not nursing but a couple of times a day."
Although some might consider a pacifier a more socially acceptable way to comfort their child, Paul said she would prefer that her child receive comfort at her breast.
When Tiernan needs comforting, he will ask his mother for "nummies," his word for breast-feeding, Paul said. "We've had conversations about what it tastes like and he says it's very sweet," like vanilla ice cream, Paul said.
She is happy with the choice she made, she said, but she would never force it on somebody else.
"All I'm trying to do is let people know that it does happen, that it is perfectly normal," she said.

I always thought that you stopped breastfeeding when they youngun’s teeth came in. At 6, it has to be pretty painful on Mom’s teats.
By age six a child can be comforted in other ways than lifting mom’s shirt for nummies. If anyone should be doing that, it’s the husband. And in private.
And for those that think cow’s milk is abnormal, you’re nuts. we’ve been drinking cow’s milk for thousands of years and making cheeses and butters from it. That or goat’s milk, or yak’s milk or whatever we’ve decided to milk. And it ain’t killed us and it’s given us protein and nutrients just fine.
LOL
Then why are you reading the thread? Relax...we’re having fun. No use crying over spilled milk.
Or read an analog clock.
At a family reunion my grand daughter brought a friend age 11 years. I asked her if she wanted some chicken and she said she didn't see any chicken. I showed it to her, wings, breasts, drum sticks etc. she says, "that's not chicken". Turns out that the only kind of chicken this child had ever seen was in the form of nuggets.
The REAL wonder maker is artichokes.
The bull's penis is positioned ahead of the cow's udders, referring to the species' body frame. It's the reverse for humans.
I often thought about striking up a conversation with her at the park and pulling out my penis to urinate while talking, just to see what her reaction would be. Ten to one she would have called the police (even though there is nothing sexual about urinating).
Don’t get her started on the potatoes....she may have only seen them in tater tot form.
“but if it works for her family, so what?”
The view of breasts as sexual is innate. It is not imposed by society. When a childs brain matures to a certain degree it’s time for mom to keep her clothes on. 6 is to old for ‘nummies’ (sheesh).
I've been drinking it for 63 years and I'm doing fine. None of that pretend milk (2%) either. I occasionally drink a glass of half and half too. My cholesterol is hunky dory by the way.
My second started talking 14 months and was potty trained at 16 months. We were getting all worried about it.
Most parents defeat a natural inclination to potty train by being too lazy. Diapers allow you to put things off till later.
Ick.
Pftoey.
nuh huh
Yes they are, young man. Yes they are.
This woman is borderline sick. Makes one wonder about her secret thoughts that I believe are not “wholesome”...
Ha! That would have been hilarious! Thanks for the laugh!!!
Ick, just ick
It takes stories like this to get the facts out to people.
It's not like she went to a mall and flashed the public to assert her right to breast-feed her 6-year-old.
She doesn't sound like someone looking for approval, but someone who is trying to help others who are feeling a lack of approval for doing what is perfectly natural.
It wasn't long ago that women were being told they were crazy to breast-feed. Of course, that was the story from the companies that want to sell formula, but it took a long time to overcome that perception and convince people that breast-feeding was better.
Just go to the story and look at the comments, and you'll see people still saying that formula is better. Ignorance is bliss, I guess.
Getting permanent teeth, getting ridiculous.
Getting wisdom teeth, getting sicko.
Getting false teeth, getting into necrophilia.
WHISKER BURNS!
