It wants, according to one official, "to neutralise the Hamas militia men" so they can no longer fire into Israel.
In the last day, the way Israel believes it can do that has become a little clearer.
The air strikes have tried to kill as many Hamas fighters as possible and to destroy the infrastructure of power and governance that Hamas has been trying to build since it took over in Gaza.
The first wave of attacks went very well from Israel's point of view.
During the Palestinian armed uprising after 2000, Israeli bombers attacked Palestinian security bases many times.
Often their attacks were expected, and they flattened empty buildings.
But at no time did they attempt an air offensive on the scale that they began on Saturday.

I am praying that Israel finds and delivers that knockout punch.
And in no way is Israel going to allow UN Peacekeepers to show up to rearm the lunatics.
Next up. The Iranian humanitarian supply ship.
Includes the usual...but does have video of the Israeli tanks ...
It’s amazing. Gaza could be extremely wealthy if it weren’t for their pig-headed culture of annihilation.
Let's hope that the 2nd thru the 10,000th wave of attacks go just as well, until there is no more Hamas, no more Fatah.
They have to go further. How long ago did they thoroughly pound Hezbollah, and how soon did they recover as well? Israel cannot continue to play footsie with these clowns and hope against hope that somehow they will learn. They won’t.
Occupation won’t help either. The situation demands that either the Palestinians cut this crap out, or Israel will have to push ALL the Gaza Palestinians into Egypt, and slam the door shut behind them.
If Israel has gnawing guilt about it, set aside $10B, and give each individual man, woman and child—not their leaders, $6,600, as a goodbye present. That’s four times what the average Egyptian makes in a year, so it is more than enough.
But no more Palestinians in Gaza, ever.
So that it won’t just sit empty, repopulate it with Israeli Arabs. Keep the walls, however.
Note in all of this mess...none of the PLO guys are saying anything negative. The Palestinian leadership outside of Gaza are also fairly quiet. I think the Hamas guys really guessed wrong on this reaction and how far it would go. And if some Iranian resupply vessel were to show up...I’m thinking it would be sunk quickly.
Some of what i have read...seems to indicate they want to kill Hamas and let FATAH move in....
Yeah, I’ve read that too. Kinda like feeding the weaker crocodile if you ask me, but that’s only MHO.
FNS is showing muzzies at the Israeli Consulate in London, and other places. I believe we should go to every muzzie hate temple in the country and have signs stating Get Hezbollah, Hamas and the other terrorist muzzies out of the world!
Get me a turtleneck made out of chain mail and I'm with ya.
