Terrorist Mohamoud Hassan, 23, a student at the University of Minnesota, was apparently killed during heavy fighting between al-Shabaab and African peacekeepers Friday in Mogadishu.
A fellow fighter called at least one friend in Minnesota to report the news of Hassan’s death, and some young Somali-Americans were quickly spreading the word Friday night through Facebook status updates.
According to one source who heard directly from the friend who received the phone call, Hassan and others were on their way to break their fast for Ramadan when they were attacked.”

Tension is growing within the Minneapolis Somali community as it awaits the next indictments in the federal probe of the disappearances of young men who became fighters in their homeland’s ongoing warfare.
So far, three Somali men have pleaded guilty to terrorism-related charges. Now several others — who either know the men or were considering returning to their homeland to fight for a terrorist group — are waiting to learn whether they, too, have been targeted by federal investigators.
Stephen L. Smith, a Minneapolis attorney who has counseled up to 20 local Somalis questioned by federal agents over the past 10 months, said recently that a number of people have contacted him and expressed “a heightened sense of concern” that they may be in legal jeopardy.
E.K. Wilson, special agent for the FBI in Minneapolis, has declined to comment on the case, but it is believed that new indictments may soon be announced. Wilson has said that the investigation is far from finished.

Troy Kastigar’s family received reports of his death within the past week, according to friends of the family. The circumstances of his reported death aren’t clear, and the information could not be confirmed by the FBI.”

MILITARY bases and navy ships will be turned into virtual fortresses under plans to beef-up security in the wake of a major terrorist plot.
Taxi drivers and other members of the public will be banned from entering military bases without getting high-level clearance after an urgent review found Australia’s frontline defence facilities were among the least protected in the world.
The top-secret review also found Australia’s top defence brass would be vulnerable to a terrorist strike and recommended their leafy military showpiece, at Duntroon in Canberra, be turned into a secure compound.
Among sweeping reforms, the review calls for bases to be made more secure in the wake of an attempted terror plot by Islamic extremists.
Prime Minister Kevin Rudd announced the review on August 5 after police arrested four men loyal to the Somalia-based terrorist movement al-Shabaab during raids in Melbourne.
Security agencies allege the terror suspects planned to attack Holsworthy Barracks in Sydney’s southwest and had been seen acting suspiciously around military facilities in Victoria.

MOMBASA, Kenya — The mother of a top al-Qaida fugitive who was killed in a U.S. raid in Somalia demanded today to see her son’s body while a Somalia-based group claimed him as their leader and confirmed his death.
Saleh Ali Saleh Nabhan, a 30-year-old Kenyan, was wanted for the 2002 car bombing of a beach resort in Kenya and a failed attempt to shoot down an Israeli airliner. Three senior U.S. officials familiar with Monday’s commando raid confirmed he was killed.
Aisha Abdallah told the Associated Press she wants “to see the body of my son before it is buried.”
“My son has never been a terrorist,” said Abdallah, dressed in an orange and black headscarf in her modest, four-room apartment in this steamy coastal city.
Nabhan was a senior instructor for new recruits for a Somali militia called al-Shabab, according to National Public Radio. The recruits included a handful of young Somali-Americans from Minneapolis, NPR said.

The radicalisation of the Somali Youth Movement has concerned me for some time. It’s now not only hitched it’s wagon to brand al Qaeda, but is adopting the tactics seen in other insurgent theatres of conflict. For al Qaeda it is a plus plus situation. It doesn’t need to operate in Somalia in order to gain currency and power and influence from the events there. The Somali Youth Movement is doing this for it. As many of you would know al Qaeda has had a hard time operating in any sizeable manner in the country and has tried and failed repeatedly to establish itself on the ground. It no longer needs to. The movement has hitched itself onto al Qaeda’s wagon of its own initiative and for its own purposes. Linking in Osama like this makes it a more attractive jihad destination, and gives it the power and currency to compete for recruits against the many other theatres of combat.
It also internationalises the Youth Mujahideen. This has significant consequences and could see al Qaeda tap into it/subcontract out for external operations.”

An FBI spokesman in Seattle, Fred Gutt, told CNN that investigators are aware of the report, but he declined to comment about it in detail. When asked if the FBI was looking into the report, Gutt would only say “we have continuing outreach efforts with the (Somali-American) community.”
Federal agents have been investigating possible recruiting efforts in the United States by Al-Shabaab, a Somali group with ties to al Qaeda that the U.S. classifies as a terrorist organization.”
Probably one of the guys the local paper refused to run a picture of when asked to do so by the FBI.

SNIPPET; “Shabaab suicide bombers conducted a coordinated assault against an African Union peacekeeper base in Mogadishu. The deputy military commander for the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) was among the nine people killed in the attack.
The suicide bombers entered the AMISOM military compound in Mogadishu driving two white vehicles with United Nations markings, Reuters reported. The two UN-marked vehicles, which were looted from a compound in Baidoa, were followed by two truckloads of Somali troops.
“We thought they were real UN cars carrying white people, but moments later deafening thunder shook the ground,” a witness at the compound told Reuters. “The area was covered with flames and clouds of smoke.”
The drivers of the car “spoke English and identified themselves as being from the United Nations,” Somalia’s information minister said.
Shabaab had good intelligence on when and how to launch the attack. The attack took place as AMISOM commanders were meeting with senior Somalia officials at the compound, and the attackers entered the compound with ease.”
