Australian authorities said Sunday they will not attempt to hunt down a shark believed to have killed a swimmer, as reports said the victim would not have wanted the predator to die.

Police suspect that avid diver and fisherman Brian Guest, 51, was taken by a shark as he was snorkelling with his son near Rockingham, south of Perth on Australia's west coast, on Saturday.

Witnesses saw flashes of fins and blood in the water and nothing has been found of Guest except some shreds believed to have come from his wetsuit.

Fremantle Water Police, who were Sunday searching the area for any remains, said there would be no attempt to hunt the shark.

Too bad for the diver that the shark wasn't as charitable.

I bet the next victim would have wanted the shark to die.

Do killer sharks have a high recidivism rate?

Even an experienced sharker can have his problems.

Perhaps they should put the shark in “shark jail” so he can “learn his lesson”.

The prosecutor knows it is hard to convict in Australia with out a body.

as reports said the victim would not have wanted the predator to die.

The next meal will find that very comforting.

This is the same as saying we shouldn't prosecute the killer of an Amish person.

Well, unless you want to hide under your bed all the time life has it's little risks. I's rather swim with sharks and gators and cottonmouth mocassins than walk around in NYC, Chicago or many similar cities.

Before you ask, yes, I've done so, the critters are much more rational.

It seems every show about a bear attack, etc, IF the victim survived with just one eye lost and a disfigured head, has to include the victim saying they don’t “blame” the bear. Usually they say it was their own fault!

Best I saw was a guy hiking with his little girl, minding their own business, but they crossed paths w a grizzly which promptly attacked them both. They actually blamed themselves for being there!

There is no way of knowing which shark killed the man. Hunting down the shark means basically killing any large sharks found in the area and checking stomachs until the right one is found.

Does anyone know if a shark that kills once, will do so again? I once heard its true of bears and leopards with a few notorious man killers becoming accustomed to human flesh.

But the Shark Rights Commission will probably file a grievance .

If that was the final wish for the swimmer, I am assuming PETA members will actually sacrifice themselves for their cause because we all know that animal rights trump human rights in the minds of these insane people.

No, they do not.

Fatal shark attacks occur in Australia at a rate of about one each year. They are rare events and generally seem to involve a shark mistaking a human being for one of the animals it normally feeds on. They don’t develop a taste for humans.

Just look for the shark with the T-shirt that says, "I went to Australia, and I'll I got was this lousy snorkeler", or trace his ATM card until they find that shark that's been using it.
