New York, NY (AHN) - Soaring numbers of homeless families are staying in New York City shelters, boosting the number of homeless people with children to record high rates.
The Department of Homeless Services said Monday that the number of homeless families with children entering shelters in November was up 40 percent over the same time last year.
Coalition for the Homeless said there were 9,720 families with children staying in shelters in November, which was the highest number documented since the city began keeping track in 1983.
Homeless advocates fear the number will continue to climb as the recession worsens.
Being homeless makes it harder for children to succeed in school. And the problem extends to society as well.
Last week Last week, First Focus, a bipartisan children's advocacy organization, released a report detailing the economic cost to the nation as a whole when children fall into poverty.
First Focus's report found that the United States will suffer a future economic loss of over $1.7 trillion if the current recession drives an additional 3 million children into poverty, as has been predicted.
Socialist cry: do it for the children. Pull at people’s most vulnerable morals. Use their morals against them to gain control.
All taken care of on 1/21?
Loosen up housing regulation? Get rid of rent control? Get rid of union-sponsored labor regulations that make an entry-level job impossible to get? Nah, let’s not get carried away.
Invalid statistic. Proves only that more people are using the resource. Could just as well indicate a better performing program, rephrased: "40% more families with children are taking advantage of available social welfare programs than at this time last year."
Unfortunately, no. In order to effect a bailout of CA, MI, NYC, NY, and the NYT, the cries of woe will get worse, not better.
Homeless? New York is fine, Boston is better, San Francisco is best of all.
I know that....you know that....but, will the MSM report on it after that date?
Oh, yes - right up until the checks clear.
BTW, I forgot the UAW.
What? You mean there’s no affordable housing on Fifth Avenue?
“40% more families with children are taking advantage of available social welfare programs than at this time last year.”
Exactly. If you build it, they will come.
Get rid of the child labor laws. Children have nimble hands and tons of energy and do not need to be the drains on the system that their parents are.
Most business that is still up and running would prefer to use them, not to mention the cost benefits since children are healthier and work for less money.
These liberal child labor laws were the first thing we got wrong. This new Depression means we can finally get it right.
I seem to remember some months ago, the state shut down church shelters, claiming they did not meet “standards”. Is my memory faulty? Could this be the result?
Hang on folks, we're in for a bumpy ride. Too bad there's an empty suit at the controls.
