Former Alabama Governor Don Siegelman blames Republican dirty tricks for the nine months he spent in prison. He talks to the Daily Beasts Paul Alexander about clearing his name, anger at Roveand mopping prison floors.
Last week, Al Gore sent an email message urging supporters to give money to Don Siegelmans legal defense fund. Gore is the latest in a string of high profile supporters to suggest Siegelman, the former Governor of Alabama, was the victim of a Republican plot when he was found guilty of bribery, conspiracy and fraud in 2006, and sentenced to seven years in prison.
Now, in the waning days of the Bush administration, Siegelman is trying to win back his freedomnot to mention his good namein a courtroom in Atlanta. Earlier this year, an appeals court granted his release after he had served nine months, saying the Governors appeal had raised substantial questions about the case against him. Siegelmans cause was helped by a bipartisan group of 54 former state attorneys general from across the country who filed a federal appeals brief supporting his bid to overturn the conviction. Republican insiders have also come forward to say Siegelman was unfairly targeted by Rove and his circle.

Oh poor baby...
hmmmm
Ummm... he broke the law? This jerk shows up on Air America at least once a week pleading for money.
Democrat Alabama Governor Don Siegelman had a long history of Blogojevich style pay or play bribery.
Not to mention blatant theft of the 2002 election.
Nah, toilets, that’s the ticket.
Republicans just aren’t that smart?

Scooter Siegelman would be walking free except for this injustice perpetrated by Valerie Plame and Joe Wilson.
Oh, did I confuse two stories? Sorry.
Yep, it’s always a Republican plot of some kind.
This crumb is a blubber clinton clone. His graft goes back to the 70’s. I do not think he has ever done an honest thing in his putrid career. Too bad for Alabama is that he and Fleeceum Scrushy were not sentenced to life without parole.
Siegelman (D) is a corrupt POS and peolpe in Alabama know it.
He is trying to connect Karl Rove to himself in any way possible because he knows it will cause sympathy from Democrats.
The thing is...half of the folks in Bama actually believe Siegelman was taken down because of Rove now. Even when you explain the money aspects to them...that Don actually took money for a bribe...they won’t accept that as a “bad” thing. I think at this point....because the Bama court system is trying hard to keep Don out of jail using this Rove episode....is for Bush to pardon Siegelman on Christmas Day. Later, Bush can claim in his memoirs that Don bribed him for the pardon.
A person has to fancy himself mighty important to believe that Karl Rove was spending time conspiring to ruin his life.
I have to wonder if such persons have all their marbles.
And Rove beat the dems like a freaking drum.

Siegelman, 61, and Scrushy, 54, were convicted last year of bribery, conspiracy and mail fraud. The government accused Siegelman of naming Scrushy to a hospital regulatory board in exchange for $500,000 in donations to Siegelman’s 1999 campaign for a state lottery for education. The defense contended there was no quid-pro-quo or personal benefit.
Siegelman also was convicted of obstruction of justice for trying to hide money given by a lobbyist for a motorcycle. The defense contends it was a legitimate transaction and not as depicted by prosecutors.

Conyers is investigating whether the 2006 prosecution on corruption charges of Siegelman, a Democrat, was politically motivated.
In looking into the issue, questioned the thoroughness of that probe, noting that investigators had not contacted the jurors themselves, or the federal marshals who allegedly passed notes between the jurors and the prosecution team.
DOJ investigation, then added in a footnote:
Out of an abundance of caution, the Department of Justice recently reopened the investigation into this matter in response to concerns raised about the completeness of the investigation ... It remains the case that we are not aware of any improper contacts.
