Riot police from Stockholm and Gothenburg are being sent to provide back-up for their colleagues in Malmö as tensions in the southern city continue to flare.
After two nights of intensive rioting, police in the city requested assistance from units specially trained to deal with mass violent demonstrations.
"We don't think it's over yet. We think it's going to continue and we have to be prepared to work around the clock," said regional police spokesman Charley Nilsson.
Emotions have been running high in Malmö's predominantly immigrant Rosengård district since police forcibly removed three squatters from the basement offices of an Islamic cultural centre. The premises had been occupied since November 24th as part of a protest against the landlords decision not to renew the associations lease for the space, which it had held for the past fifteen years.
Thursday night saw the most extreme rioting in Rosengård since the disturbances began. Police were pelted with Molotov cocktails and bomb threats were issued against a local petrol station.
Police spokeswoman Ewa-Gun Westford said she would not even hazard a guess as to how many police vehicles were damaged in the rioting, as locals were reportedly joined by left-wing extremists, or "autonomists", from outside the area.
The city's fire and rescue services have been refusing to enter the area until their safety can be guaranteed.
One person was arrested for rioting, while another was detained for disturbing the peace.
By 3am on Friday the situation had stabilized somewhat and police were able to move in and remove burning trailers and other objects from the streets with the aid of a bulldozer.
Me too... I think.
That’s where you catch the train for Copenhagen. No?
Is it me, or does the number of arrests seem a trifle low for a riot?
I wouldn’t rule out leftists either. They have a track record of alliances with muslims and any other group who will help them kick their own culture in the teeth.
In Malmo, the "locals" are Muslim. But it comes as no surprise they were joined by leftists. The same dynamic happens on the U. C. Berkeley campus.
Nothing, apparently.
The muslims, on the other hand, are always p*ssed off.
They already at at it again. Mostly setting cars on fire according to the local media.
Earlier today a bomb was disarmed in central Malmo (probably not related). Southern Sweden is also a bit of an area for the east European mafia.
Should be a fun night.
As, the Swedish Christmas carol goes:
“Now, we are lighting a thousand Christmas lights”
Merry Christmas.
Train? When I was there it was a ferry.............March 2000..........They had a bridge being under construction........
This cellar mosque in question was a home to a bunch of salafist bin laden loving bastards.
Ironically, these women hating, gay hating folks joined forces with the Swedish Anti fascist brigade. A bunch of spoilt middle class kids who go through some years living like a radical before they take up high positions at our universities and in our media. An, old European situation since the student rebellions in the late sixties.
No wonder we are in trouble, huh?
But I thought EVERYONE was happy in Socialist paradises where the government takes care of you from cradle to grave?
And Sweden IS a Socialist paradise, isn’t it?
I am actually waiting for the SWEDES to riot.
It’s high time just about now.
Merry Christmas to you too and stay safe!
Those two guys nust have been VERY busy!
"The police oppress us because we are muslims"
Snipers on rooftop and commandos with tanks
Flashbang grenades and soldiers in ranks
boiling clouds of CS gas and K-9s to flanks
Malmo needs a few of these things...
Thank you.
I am actually watching a Danish Christmas show at the moment. Just had to have a look at developments in Malmo for a sec.
Think, I will go back to the show. It seems more wholesome to me :-)
I loved singing it to the “Favorite Things” tune!
Lots of transport goes thru Malmo; Like many Swedish towns there’s a ferry service there as well. Took that in (wow!) the mid-60’s.
Yes, the answer that dare not speak its name...
