Bush Has Made Us Vulnerable
WSJ Online ^ | 19 dec 08 | MARK HELPRIN

In his great Civil War history, "Decision in the West," Albert Castel describes the last Confederate hope of victory. If in 1864 the Confederate armies continue to exact a steep cost from the North, "the majority of Northerners will decide that going on with the war is not worth the financial and human cost and so will replace Lincoln and the Republicans with a Democratic president and Congress committed to stopping hostilities and instituting peace negotiations." He cites the resolution of the Confederate Congress that: "Brave and learned men in the North have spoken out against the usurpations and cruelties daily practiced. The success of these men over the radical and despotic faction which now rules the North may open the way to . . . a cessation of this bloody and unnecessary war." Plus ça change .

It’s good that the Bushes have Barney and Beazley. Because the more I see, the more I know that old joke about loyalty in Washington...is no joke.

“The future is not certain, but we do have it in us the capacity to defeat this enemy just like we did Nazism and Global Communism.”

I’m not so sure global communism has been defeated. China and Russia are worrying me much more than the Islamists.

More crap editorials from the Wall Street Journal (WSJ). The WSJ is joke now that Murdoch owns it. The WSJ has always been for open borders.

Protecting the borders and limiting people from terrorists countries from entering would have stopped 9/11 and saved us a trillion dollars. Accessing the 4x times Saudis oil in the lower 48 (shale oil, coal diesel, north dakota oil) would have made Islamic terrorism a non-issue.

You have to stay in touch with the public, especially as costs climb. I know this view is not popular here.

100% spot on. Bush, unfortunately, is the worst communicator to ever hold the Presidency, especially with the public.

He can't even bring himself to come out and tell America that Bin Laden is most likely dead, and the lib scum will probably take credit for his death once they're in office.

Mark Helprin can go to Hell.

Ditto- Where he can join the rest of the RINOS and DEMS who have not served our Country and its people.

IMHO, I will always love and respect President Bush. This POTUS has served us well and what ever decisions he makes to show the world we will not stand for the WOT before the end of his administration, I'll be cheering him on all the way.

God Bless the USA and may President George W.Bush and Family enjoy their ranch in Crawford with the knowledge that he was loved by many.

Too many people think this war on terrorism is going to be like a hollywood movie; over in a couple of hours and then they can go back to their lives. Let’s call what this war really is-a clash of civilizations- and, sorry to be the messenger of bad news but the war will last a couple of GENERATIONS.

Too many Americans are detached from reality as they've been taught by the Left what to feel and what not to feel. The Left heards Americans like sheep and they respond willingly.

...”After only a few weeks of the fighting in Afghanistan, the public was already war weary.”...

Not really true, in my view. The treasonous leftist media began to publish demoralizing lies about lack of progress and quagmire, much as they did after Tet in 1968. Had they not done that in their unprincipled zeal to aid the democrats, things would have been quite different, ultimately including stopping the fraudulent election of a charlatan like Barack Obama. The “public” for the most part knows what the so-called MSM tell it, so when the media lie, the “public” accepts it as truth.

The whole country is collapsing. Today a US funded globalist agency is declaring that the USA will sink into anarchy. The taxpayer is being robbed of everything as the globalist Bush pushes to bail out the ‘global economy’ sacrificing the US domestic economy to do it.

He is creating the new dark ages with the wealthy middle east with their 11th century culture on top.

The man has been a complete disaster for the United States.

Time to bail out of the Republican party and register as an independent voter.

But they don't represent entities intent on transforming the world under the rule of Global Marxist Leninism which was the end goal of the Soviet Union and China under Mao.

China may still try and claim it is China, but it represents little in the way of state domination of the economy and wealth redistribution. Frankly they represent Fascism far more then they do Communism.

And Russia is nothing more then a authoritarian dictatorship.

Together they represent our second greatest existential threat to Western Civilization, and that is “Eastern Authoritarianism” which basically is the argument that free peoples can not Govern themselves, and will be in need of demagogue strong man to guide man and state.

We can even see this idea catching on here in the states. Look at all the “czars” or strong men with little oversight who are going to be in charge of vast swaths of industry and national security.

Mark Helprin understands history better than the right wing shouters on the radio, or any of the idiot box pundits. This piece, like his previous essays, will stand the test of time. Democracy in Arabia? There was, in Lebanon 50 years ago. Freedom from colonialism in Africa? That’s worked out great, hasn’t it. I predicted the hysterical reactions here reading this piece in print this morning. Bush worship ain’t dead. Let’s post the pic of the Iraqi woman with a purple finger, shall we?

“China may still try and claim it is China”

Should read, “China may still try and claim it is Communist”

“Freedom from colonialism in Africa”

Freedom also involves the freedom to fail. It is not up to European Powers to decide the fate of the nations of Africa.

But it is up to the Western taxpayers to feed them, cure their diseases and prolong their failures, isn’t it. I’m talking practice, not idealistic theory.

What an idiot. he mentions Bush and what he did by name, but then says “democrats” failed too.
EXCUSE ME, if WILLIAM JEFFERSON CLINTON had dealt with the terrorist threat when it was just a threat we wouldn’t have been in this mess.
If not for what George W. Bush has done for us in an “inconclusive seven-year struggle against a ragtag enemy in two small bankrupt states.” he would be praying 5 times a day now on a mat under threat of being beheaded.

Does this idiot really think that these well funded, well organized, politically protected, state sponsored terrorists are a “ragtag enemy”?

This guy needs a clue.
