I think a typesetter lost a ^ or the superscript 27 fell down due to font...or it’s magnetic field was also breached so succumbed to gravity...

Dan Ra^ther must be messing with your HTMLogrator. Mine says,

"10²⁷ particles per second were flowing into the magnetosphere—that's a 1 followed by 27 zeros."

I’m not sure the editor understands how to handle “10 to the 27th;” superscripts can be a problem.
