Shoe insult against Bush resounds in Arab world

BAGHDAD: A day after an Iraqi television journalist threw his shoes at President George W. Bush at a news conference here Sunday, his act of defiance toward the American commander in chief reverberated throughout Iraq and across the Arab world.

In Sadr City, the sprawling Baghdad suburb that has seen some of the most intense fighting between insurgents and U.S. soldiers since the 2003 invasion, thousands of people marched in his defense. In Syria, he was hailed as a hero. In Libya, he was given an award for courage.

Throughout much of the Arab world Monday, the shoe-throwing incident generated front-page headlines and continuing television news coverage. A thinly veiled glee could be discerned in much of the reporting, especially in the places where anti-American sentiment runs deepest.

I think he should have given the “Solid Love” gang sign then said, “I’ll see YOU later”.

Whatever, most people are embarrassed over this behavior, especially since it came from a Baathist.

I wish President Bush had caught the first shoe and whipped it right back into that donkey’s face.

Great post.

I really don't think these folks are ready for freedom, but this guy had a taste of it, whether he knew it or not.

I have been at odds with President Bush over many things..but he handled this incident with grace. Sort of like, “I risked a lot to give your nation freedom..so throw your shoes at me..it's your right.”

Me..I'm pretty po’d over this guy throwing his shoes at the President. (Be it Bush, Clinton or whoever.)

He's a bigger person than me, I guess.

What vile, pathetic creatures are these Arabs. And they hated us long before Bush invaded Iraq. I will never forget the 911 images of them dancing with joy in the streets of their filth strewn cities at the slaughter of innocents by Muslim fanatics. The less we have to do with any of them the better. AND NO MORE VISAS to Arab Muslims!

A “hero” for throwing shoes? The mid east is a laughing stock....IMHO....
