New study firmly ties hormone use to breast cancer (What a dumb title, as if there were some doubt?)

SAN ANTONIO: Taking menopause hormones for five years doubles the risk for breast cancer, according to a new analysis of a big federal study that reveals the most dramatic evidence yet of the dangers of these still-popular pills.

Even women who took estrogen and progestin pills for as little as a couple of years had a greater chance of getting cancer. And when they stopped taking them, their odds quickly improved, returning to a normal risk level roughly two years after quitting.

Collectively, these new findings are likely to end any doubt that the risks outweigh the benefits for most women.

It is clear that breast cancer rates plunged in recent years mainly because millions of women quit hormone therapy and fewer newly menopausal women started on it, said the study's leader, Dr. Rowan Chlebowski of Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles.

"It's an excellent message for women: You can still diminish risk (by quitting), even if you've been on hormones for a long time," said Dr. Claudine Isaacs of Georgetown University's Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center. "It's not like smoking where you have to wait 10 or 15 years for the risk to come down."

Study results were given Saturday at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium.

They are from the Women's Health Initiative, which tested estrogen and progestin pills that doctors long believed would prevent heart disease, bone loss and many other problems in women after menopause. The main part of the study was stopped in 2002 when researchers saw surprisingly higher risks of heart problems and breast cancer in hormone users.

Since then, experts have debated whether these risks apply to women who start on hormones when they enter menopause, usually in their 50s, and take them for shorter periods of time. Most of the women...

I took Premirin for 4 years. The first 2 were good, the next 2 years almost drove me crazy. I had all kinds of reactions, my GYN also scoffed that hormones were the problem. I would go off for a while and the reactions would stop, go back on and they would begin again. After about 3 or 4 times I decided my body had not been making hormones about of mare's urine and I stopped for good. Never felt better.

OKAY...but, it’s not about premarin, it’s about nutrients....like SSKI - which is potassium Iodide....a mineral many are deficient in.

My wife and me both take bio-identical s, have our blood work done every three months, and if adjustments are to be made on dosage.Expensive, but worth it.Not wealthy, just would rather feel younger than have a new car, or whatever.

"the so called bioidentical hormones carry the same risks as the pharmaceutical hormones."

That kind of disinformation is cruel! - The opposite has been proven, but the Pharma monsters keep fighting back for the dollars.

"the RA doc just wanted to put me on $10,000 a year drugs that would require OTHER drugs to counteract the EFFECTS of those drugs"

Yep, "Follow the MONEY!" - The AMA poison pushers get rich and their 'patients' keep dying years younger than if they had done nothing but eat a preindustrial diet.

Dr. Erika Schwartz is a bio-identical hormones pioneer. She knows her stuff, and advocates for women against Big Pharma.

Her website is a must see! It's chock full of info.

I just want to add, for the record, that I morally disagree with her advocacy for the use of IUDs, although this is not part of the current discussion.

dr erika must be a student of my doc...Dr. Wright.....he’s been doing the bio-ID hormones for 30+ years....from what I understand he “invented” them....

And, for those who care....Dr. Wright now has a thermographic Mammogram machine....NO X-rays, and I believe less “pressure” (women no what I mean).....where I’ll get my next Mamm checkup....some postulate that the pushing of the Mammogram has caused SOME of the problems with breast cancer.

She hawking her own wares. Regardless, whether it's bio-identical or not, what matters is what happens intracellularly after the estrogen and progesterone receptors are bound, leaving aside bioavailability, half-life, etc.

I, and my sister have both cured our RA with natural approaches. My sister was in very bad trouble when it became such a desperate situation that I took to the internet and learned of a condition called "leaky gut syndrome".

It has taken her years but her health is restored. Her liver has recovered, too.

My RA responded to Vit C, Vit E and Pantothentic acid.

Doctors only treat symptoms. They do not care about the cause and when a side effect pops up, they prescribe another drug in the hopes of counteracting the first drug.

At least with the pharmaceutical brands you know what you are getting.ie. with one gram of Premarin Cream it is .625 grams of conjugated estrogens. They have been studied for sixty plus years—how much estrogen is in a given compounded cream? Where did the estrogen come from-a plant? then it had to be synthesized. Urine from a mare is as natural as a plant. No synthesizing. Studied more than any other drug.

When you smear the cream on your vulva how much do you use? How much is absorbed? It may not have a “first pass” on the liver but it will pass eventually thru the liver. If it is a lotion is it a suspension of equal distribution top to bottom? Meaning is the first pump the same strength as the last thirty days later? So many questions and no answers. Would you take a bio-identical oral contraceptive? Not me.
