“he was mentored by Lonnie Mack and Albert King more than anyone.”
Oh, yeah...Lonnie Mack, oh yeah!!!!!
yeah, I guess you've got that right. Just another overnight sensation. One song just like the other... kinda like Milli Vanilli, except with Fender Strat and a lot of reverb.
I guess I'm just a little fond of SRV since I saw him play in some clubs in Dallas and Austin, I just thought he was good player. My bad, I apologize. I'm glad you cleared that up for me.
By the way are the T-birds and Jimmie also pop, or are they blues? Just wonderin.
SRV was, this guy doesn't know d#ck about guitar players. Humor him.
Even Jimmie says his brother was a better player... as do most guitar players. ... you know those nobodies like ...... Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Tommy Emmanuel, Mark Knofler, Pat Metheny... you know ... just guys that are into "pop"...hahahahaha.
It's music, it's subjective... this guy is the type that likes to sound big by putting down a talented player...
Listen to some Lonnie Mack if you want to hear some nice licks that set the table for a lot of the players.
happy pickin...
I’m glad you mentioned Mark Knopfler and Tommy Emmanuel, my two favorites.
Amen Renee!

I guess “pop” was a poor choice of words, on my part. What I meant was that Stevie played a more widely popular style of blues, not “POP” music. A combination of Texas Blues, Chicago-style, with a lot of Jimi thrown in. As I did make clear, “he was very, very good.” I always got kind of a mid 50s Blues vibe from the Thunderbirds. Sort of pre- Rock and Roll. Not the jazzier feelin’ stuff like Eddie Vinson, or Jordan, but the smaller band music that came right after them, and right before R&R.
you're right, I like SRV...
“I dont like what Jimmie said about the war. A little too much Ron Paul too.”
What didn’t you like about his reply to the question?
God bless you Mr. Vaugh.

“...but invading sovereign countries is absolutely ridiculous, horrifying, un-American, and wrong. Who could have imagined that it would be like this? We shouldn’t police the world.”
That. And all it implies about the war and our military. I didn’t know we were ‘policing’ Iraq and Afghanistan. Invading sovereign countries. Like we just decided to march in there and fight for no reason. Like Iraq hadn’t violated the terms of cease fire. Like Saddam hadn’t been given time to get out of the country before we attacked. Like there were no WOMD’s. Like we don’t have allies that we’ve promised to protect. Like Osama Bin Laden was just minding his biz and we went after him. Stuff like that.
I’ll give you and ‘amen’ on that post. :)
Stevie Ray was a stand alone guitar great. His popularity has nothing to do with his talent. The one does not cancel out the other. Watching Stevie Ray play is watching a man, to be corny, who is one with his guitar. He played it like he was born with a guitar strapped around him.
There's some stuff on Youtube that shows SRV and Lonnie Mack playing Wham and Oreo Cookie Blues.... priceless.
SRV was a stand up guy. He yanked Lonnie away from whiskey and cookies and got him going again. He seemed like an "ok dude". It's not very often that you get to help your idol who is down on his luck.
Like I said, I'm a guitar playing fan of SRV and just liked the fact that he kept doing what he always had done in little clubs and bars in Texas... the rest of the world just caught on.
I guess I'm a bit more mellow now, but I tend to like Tommy Emmanuel's stuff. He's a throwback to Chet Atkins , Joe Pass and Travis .
Check out his stuff on youtube... especially his arrangement of "somewhere over the rainbow".
"Angelina". just amazing what a man and a guitar are capable of. Nice melodies and just flat out a man and a guitar... pure gold. Neat stuff. Even some improv stuff on his version of Classical Gas is so unique.
Tommy seems a lot like SRV in that he shares what he knows with other players and is generous with his time, which is the most valuable possession we have.
Funny thing is he's also the little brother of a great guitar player. Crazy Ausie living in Nashville... what a world we live in.
happy picking.
ok fella, here ya go.
Now yer talking. His playing is a little more towards rat-rod than that, but I’ll take it.
from three weeks ago.
Happy New Year, everybody!!!
Ron Paul Ping!
