Governor Lauds Interior Secretary’s Firearm Decision

December 5, 2008, Anchorage, Alaska – Governor Sarah Palin today lauded the decision by the U.S. Department of the Interior that will allow an individual to carry a concealed weapon in national parks and wildlife refuges. The new rule only applies if the individual is authorized to carry a concealed weapon under state law in the state in which the national park or refuge is located.

“The possession and use of firearms is especially critical to Alaskans,” Governor Palin said. “We will continue to protect gun rights. The ability to carry a firearm can define a life or death situation, especially for protection against surprise encounters with wildlife, mainly bears. I appreciate the Interior Department recognizing this is a step in the right direction.”

Within Alaska, most of the national parks and refuge areas are open to various forms of hunting, so possession and use of firearms is already widely allowed under both state and federal law. Currently, firearms are prohibited in Denali National Park, Glacier Bay National Park, Katmai National Park, Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park and Sitka National Historical Park. The new rule will take effect in January.

Can you imagine going out in the forests in remote Alaska without a big gun?

So. the decision allows handguns if one has a permit from the state where the park is? I thought I had heard that if one has any state permit one could carry in a federal park.

Can anyone clear this up for me? Thanks

What a wonderful woman she is . . . I just hope she completely ignores Doprah’s pleas to be on her racist show . . . Sarah will get the same nasty treatment that Katy Kouric gave her last month. Doprah will look down her fat nose at Sarah and do what she can to humiliate her.

The left is completely scared of Sarah to the point of obsession. Doprah will be primed and ready to trash her as soon as she comes on.

"I read today that she was the only Governor to put out a statement lauding this."

Since Alaska is essentially a giant national park, this gives the citizens of her state more freedom to carry weapons. I don't see how Alaska has put up with it for so long. Imagine living in a state with vast natural resources, but most of the land is possessed by the feds, and no one can do anything with the land.

When I hunted duck in Salcha and Wainwright, I always carried a .357 Mag.

You would be a fool if you did not.

You make a good point and now and for the last twenty or thirty years the enviro nutjobs file suits against anyone wanting to tap natural resources whether in or out of the parks. Even if it's outside the boundaries they file suits if it's close because it might effect something in the park.
