MCAS Miramar has a pair of 12,000 foot runways. They are oriented east/west. This was likely a failure on a westbound takeoff. At one of the Miramar air shows, an F14 came in from the east above Mach 1. The big halo was obvious to anyone observing. The sonic boom left the little kids on the tarmac crying. At the UTC end of the runway (west), the boom broke windows in businesses. That stunt resulted in having the F14 demo canceled the following year.

The latest report was a West to East approach with a possible engine fire. Impact was about a mile short of the west end of the runways. It looks like the pilot was most likely trying to land with the wind, pretty much an indication of dire circumstances.
