"... it’s still a pretty strong indicator of whats going on."

Or isn't.

Isn't is the scary part.

Goods are already stacking up in ports worldwide because of untrustworthy lines of credit and then the ship owners are even refusing to move their ships at the current rates.

So...who knows?

A three-day supply is anything but laughable if the cops come at midnight and tell you to leave immediately or face a flood or a brush fire. What do you grap then to carry along? -a 72 hour kit. Can’t happen? It happened twice here in one year.

Oh, and I agree that a three month’s supply of food and water are better and so is a one year’s supply.

About the water, if I’m storing it in clean 2-liter pop bottles, do I have to sterilize it to drink it?

Always be careful of anything old you find and eat. You don't know where it's been.

I'm surprised grocery stores don't offer this service. They could offer a "storage fee" and rotate food in the locker from storage to store shelves after 8 months - while putting "new" food into paid lockers. Useful shelf life is years for most of the stuff on the list - so it wouldn't diminish the value of the food. Patrons could pay for storage space at the grocery store.

So, if someone is living in a 450 square foot “studio” apartment in Encino — where should he store this?

See post 184 - stores could offer a storage service for space and a restocking fee...

The guys in our area were just fantastic after the hurricane. Out came the chain saws and one even got a frontloader from one of the farms here to clear the heavy logs. Nothing like trying to move a hundred year oak. I couldn’t belive the transformers and wires balled up all over the roads. Impassable.

I lived in DC during the riots in the 60’s. I understand that level of scary. Of course, back then, the guns weren’t AK47s and the killing wasn’t “just because.”

I agree, everyone has to keep bugout bags. We have ours in the closet by the front door.

But the civil defense three day stuff is giving people a sense of complacency that the government will be there on the spot in 72 hours so don’t worry.

Worry.

I think it was Florida after a hurricane but I read an article about how looting was going on all around but no one bothered a mobile home park. Then they posted a pic. It showed men sitting on porches with shot guns .

I don’t think so. I’ve used tap water stored for six months and it’s ok. It’s flat, but drinkable. I also keep sealed emergency waterpaks, single serve. They are good for the car or bugout bags or camping too.

This is a good reference for water:

Penn state. Simple directions for storing water in bottles at home.

I will shoot you dead on the spot without prejudice if you try to overtake my house by force.

No you won't. You are stuck in your house. We can go wherever we want.

You’re a big talker for such a little man.

Whoa. I didn't know I was talking to a tough guy. Oh, I bow to your immense badness.

Actually I think this is a "fun" thread. We read about all the gloom and doom and not much we can do to changes things and here are a bunch of people that refuse to be helpless or victims and are discussing plans on how to take care of them and theirs. It gives you back a sense of control. Hopefully things will not get as bad as predicted but everyone needs to be prepared for emergencies...floods, tornadoes, blizzards, earthquakes, hurricanes etc.

Someone suggested this thread be posted weekly. I think that's a great idea. We could discuss what works and what doesn't. JAT

Guys love that kind of stuff, same goes for pulling out the walkie talkies and the armed foot patrols, chaos and the chance to buddy up in manly action is a far too rare event in modern men’s lives and we miss it.

Well think about it. If you were a thief, how many doors in America do you think you could break down before you were shot stone cold dead?

Three or four. It would be a miracle if you got into five or six.

You would NEVER break down the tenth door.

The amount of ammo on hand is an interesting point.

My theory is you cannot have too much. Ammunition might become more valuable than money and you could store thousands of rounds in a small space.

You might be able to barter for items using popular ammunition that no amount of currency or coin would buy.

It might be a great idea to buy and store ammo even if you don't own a firearm in the particular caliber. Popular calibers are .22, .223, .38 Special, 9MM, .45 ACP, 7.62 x 39MM and the nearly universal 12 Gauge shotgun shells.

Thanks. I've done that.

I'm working on coffee and chocolate presently. (Yes, really!)

What will happen if shipping breaks down...No coffee!!

" The Lord has urged that his people save for the rainy days, prepare for the difficult times, and put away for emergencies, a year's supply or more of bare necessities so that when comes the flood, the earthquake, the famine, the hurricane, the storms of life, our families can be sustained through the dark days"

The Lord has never said any such thing; here is what he really said:

Matthew Ch 6
19: Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:
20: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:
21: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
22: The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.
23: But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!
24: No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.
25: Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?
26: Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?

I'd have to turn the gun on myself if I didn't have coffee.

Excellent reminder!
