:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Critical Threats: Blank When None
The Age of 'Celebrity Terrorism'

Quite apart from the scores murdered and the hundreds injured, what the Mumbai terrorists really wanted was an exaggerated - and preferably extreme - reaction on the part of governments, the media and public opinion.

In these terms, the attackers received as much attention as they could possibly have hoped for, and the Mumbai outrage can only be described as a very significant terrorist success.

The attack received saturation coverage in the world's media from the outset. Read More

Are you better yet? I have an appointment to renew mine next week. I’m a bit curious about the reaction you had. I wonder if the vaccine has been changed this year. Also have to get the shingles vaccine. Never had that before.

Yes 100% better except a slight soreness in my arm. I talked to my neighbor who told me two people at work had the same reaction. I’m wondering if it’s a bad batch or what? I get the flu shot every year and have no problem but this was terrible.

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) — Pakistan security forces arrested at least a dozen alleged militants including one of the purported masterminds of the November terror attacks on Mumbai, according to reports from the region Monday. Among those taken into custody, Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi was said to have helped planned the attacks, which took 171 lives. Several reports identified Lakhvi as a commander of Lashkar-e-Taiba, a militant group known for its armed opposition to India’s control of part of Kashmir, a Muslim-majority mountain territory also claimed by Pakistan.

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — Security forces overran a militant camp on the outskirts of Pakistani Kashmir’s main city and seized an alleged mastermind of the attacks that shook India’s financial capital last week, two officials said Monday.

The raid was the first known response to demands by India and the United States that Pakistan targets the alleged perpetrators of the Mumbai attacks, which have sharply raised tensions between South Asia’s two nuclear-armed powers.

Backed by a helicopter, the troops grabbed Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi among at least 12 people taken Sunday in the raid on the riverbank camp run by the banned group Laskhar-e-Taiba in Pakistani Kashmir, the officials said. There was a brief gunfight in the camp near Muzaffarabad before the militants were subdued, the officials said.

India wants its 'Osama' back
Dec 9, 2008

MUMBAI - Dawood Ibrahim, one of Asia's most notorious mafia dons and India's version of Osama bin Laden, is emerging as a key suspect in the funding and logistical support for the November 26 terrorist strike on Mumbai. Ibrahim, who tops the Mumbai police list of its 44 most wanted criminals, is among 20 fugitives India has asked Pakistan to extradite following the multiple attacks in Mumbai that killed nearly 200.

Pakistan, as it did with a similar list received after terrorists assaulted India's parliament in 2001, has refused to deport the fugitives, or even acknowledge their presence in the country. The "most wanted" list reflects a deadly South Asian stew of terrorist organization chieftains, crime gang bosses, murderers, hijackers and violent leaders of separatist groups.

If Pakistan extradited Ibrahim, an Interpol-listed criminal, it may ease tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors. If not to India, Pakistan could hand him over to Interpol, or the US, where enforcement authorities want him as one of the world's most dangerous drug lords. Such a move would mollify India's public anger against Pakistan's inactivity. The catch is that India's most infamous mafia boss has stories that powerbrokers on both sides of the border might not want the world to hear. Therein lies a reason why Ibrahim apparently continues to live lavishly - alternating between Karachi and Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, according to various reports including from the Pakistan media.

Peshawar slipping into chaos
Monday, December 08, 2008

PESHAWAR: Four years ago, journalists used to go to Waziristan for the story. Today, the story itself reached Peshawar. In October 2003, a team of journalists reached Baghar in South Waziristan, to file follow-up stories of the maiden airstrike on a suspected Al Qaeda or Taliban hideout. A local journalist planned an early morning departure for the site of the strike without official permission.

Four years on, a look at the damage caused by Friday evening’s car bomb blast near the historic Qisakhawani bazaar and an attack on parked trucks carrying NATO supplies testifies the danger has arrived as close as possible.

The government itself is a hostage. An Iraq-like green zone was established in Peshawar with checkposts on the roads leading to important offices and residences. High profile kidnapping and murders have added to the fears of Peshawar residents.

Security analysts forecast that Peshawar might face an even worse scenario if over 500 hardened militants camping in Khyber Agency storm the provincial capital and the army is called upon to reclaim the city. The ever increasing pressure on Peshawar from militants will make things more difficult for the ANP government which is facing an ‘internal debate’ on whether to abandon governance or to take the fight to its logical end.

The symptoms of a Beirut-like situation are emerging. Living in Peshawar is like dancing to the tune of death.

IAF on high alert, cancels leave of key personnel
Wed, Dec 10, 2008

New Delhi: Indian Air Force (IAF) has been put on the highest level of readiness since Operation Parakram in 2001. The level of readiness has been raised to 'Passive Air Defence' (PAD). The high alert is in response to heightened perceptions of air attack on Indian positions. All IAF aircraft have been armed with bombs and missiles and are ready to take off within minutes. Even the warships of the Western Naval Fleet are aggressively patrolling the Arabian Sea.

The alert has been sounded in view of intelligence reports of air strikes at Indian installations from across the border or an aerial attack by terrorists groups based in Pakistan. However, the alert is still defensive in nature and intended to protect Indian targets.

Leave of all key personnel in the Western and South-Western Air Commands, which face Pakistan, has been cancelled. Percentage of personnel allowed to go on leave, too, has been reduced from 30 per cent to 10 per cent. However, there is still no mobilisation of troops on the border and Indian Army is not on the highest level of readiness.

Following the Mumbai terror attack, the defence chiefs had briefed defence Minister AK Antony about the steps being taking to beef up security at the border and to prevent a 9/11 type of terror attack involving aircrafts. During Operation Parakram, IAF was on 'Active Air Defence”, which means aircrafts were primed to destroy enemy targets.

Cyber Attack Linked to Company of Former Russian Spies
FOX News has learned the recent cyber attack on the U.S. military’s classified computer network has been traced to a front company operated by several former Russian spies.
By Jennifer Griffin

FOXNews.com

Wednesday, December 10, 2008

The attack led the Pentagon to ban the use of external hardware devices, such as flash drives, because that’s how the “worm” got into the classified military network.

FOX News has learned the intrusion was discovered by the U.S. military in Afghanistan — and that the attack came through the local Internet service provider that the Afghans (under U.S. supervision) contracted out to a front company run by former Russian spies.

The U.S. military relies on this Internet service provider. Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff on Wednesday warned the Russians had already used cyber warfare in Georgia.

“There was a preceding effort in denial of service ... by let us say sympathizers to the Russian side of the dispute. That was a prelude and an adjunct to the military attack where Russian troops entered Georgia,” Chertoff said. “I think this is a harbinger of what’s to come, the use of cyber attacks — preparing the battlefield, so to speak.”

Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) has denied any involvement in the recent cyber attack, and some Pentagon officials worry the former Russian spies might actually have been working for some other entity.

Chertoff added the U.S. needs a doctrine to decide when a cyber attack is an act of war — a view echoed by Deputy Defense Secretary Gordon England.

“We have seen it on a small scale already,” England said. “This larger future threat will necessarily require the (Department of Defense) to change its thinking and planning. Much like the first use of gunpowder changed the nature of warfare centuries ago.”

A cyber attack is still an attack. An act of war? Considering how quickly technology is developing, it seems to me that we need some new difinitions.

Good luck with staying caught up. I've been trying but those Chicago scandals are thicker than ticks on a coon dog.
