Obama May Cancel Space Shuttle Replacement

WASHINGTON — U.S. President-elect Barack Obama's NASA transition team is asking U.S. space agency officials to quantify how much money could be saved by canceling the Ares 1 rocket and scaling back the Orion Crew Exploration Vehicle next year.

Obama pledged during his campaign to inject an additional $2 billion into NASA aimed in part at narrowing the gap between the space shuttle's retirement and the introduction of a successor system.

While NASA Administrator Mike Griffin and his senior managers are adamant that Ares and Orion are the right vehicles to fill that role, Obama did not endorse either system by name during his campaign.

It creates jobs on Urf, and provides research for improved life here.

Sounds like a pretty socialist justification to me.

Can’t do most of that with the 1967 UN Outer Space
Treaty. Mr Obama references the 1967 UN Outer Space Treaty as keeping weapons out of space, but its actual effect is to keep us forever marooned on earth.

IE, it is a great cover for military research expenditures.

Youre wrong. The Space defense budget (secret satellites, etc) is more than twice the NASA budget.

O Zero is going after NASA because they are not one of "his" special interest groups. Dont expect him to go so hard on the Unions, minority activists, or Femi-hags and their various wish lists.

Anything that makes us technologically weaker is good for the ole Commie.

I bet those Florida voters who voted for the black muslim are going to regret that vote..... There are a lot, a whole lot, of jobs in Florida tied to NASA and Defense contracting...... Their economy is bad and it looks like it is going to get worse!

I can’t believe I’m actually agreeing with Obama...

Please make NASA explain why they want to re-invent the wheel with the Ares 1 instead of using the off-the-shelf Delta IV Heavy.

And no, make work for shuttle workers isn’t an adequate answer.

I agree to cutting back on wasting money on NASA. Manned space flight is a huge waste of time. The sooner we stop deluding ourselves about the notion of inter-planetary travel, the better. Lou Budvis, 2008

I agree to cutting back on wasting money on ocean voyages. Manned ocean voyage is a huge waste of time. The sooner we stop deluding ourselves about the notion of trans-oceanic travel, the better. Chinese emperor, circa 1433.

The China of the early 15th century was the most advanced civilization on Earth at the time. Some theorize that they had already traveled to the Americas, and most certainly had traveled to Africa and Europe... most historians agree that they had a 300+ ship armada, with some ships being over 400 feet (with the largest European ships of the time being around 100 feet). The emperor's decision to stop exploration and effectively destroy the fleet led to China's "dark ages", which allowed other cultures to catch and pass the Chinese in technology. It's taken them almost 600 years to recover.

Well, our state went overwhelmingly Republican in the election. That gives me some comfort that there are at least a majority of people with some sense here; but, still, there are those who come down south from the liberal cesspool cities and proceed to trample on the history of this area because a lot of it isn’t “politically correct” or doesn’t jive with their concepts. Leaving the high taxes and liberal madness, they seem to be bent on replacating it here - although they are critical of the results of it where they came from.

Just think. If we scrapped NASA, we could afford to take away every newborn child and put them in Early Education Preschools from Day 1.

The Space Shuttle is bad money after bad money

The CEV replaces the Space Shuttle, and Bamadamamingdong wants to cut it. Now we can depend on the Russians to get us to the Space Station, won't that be swell?

Remember, his secret dictum is "weaker overseas, more control at home" All part of his Commie plans.

We are decades away from the technology to produce a space elevator.

There is no industrial filiment strong enough to make the cable. There are some materials that are interesting but can only by manufacured in grams and a space elevator would require thousands of tons.

The power system required to lift a payload up 22,000 miles would require beaming megawatts to the elevator car without cooking the passengers.

Some SOB with a cause would crash a plane into it.

I would love to see one built but I’m afraid we won’t see it in my lifetime.

JFK vowed to go to the moon. Obama basically tells the moon to go to hell.

You mean JFK vowed to go to the moon. Obama basically flashes a moon.

What do you think the NASA budget is?? 200 Billion a year? 150 billion a year?? Heh?

Try 15 billion a year.. And we just pissed 700 billion into a bailout of stupid ass Financial Service CEO's , with Zero planning another 800 billion bailout of idiot bad borrowers and other freeloaders.

You people are ridiculous. The payback from what little we spend on NASA far exceeds all those worthless transfer payments. But ignorance is why O boy is President, I guess.

Look for the USA to have a space program like Cuba, Kenya, and other third world countries as we spiral down via experimenting with socialist and Marxist failed policies; and then experiencing the subsequent economic collapse.

We are well on our way with the financial crisis that is the result of stealth socialism used by the Democrats to put poor people into houses that they could not afford. All they have to do is increase taxes to pay for their stupid policies.

All the space powers are already enforcing it, including China. We’re going nowhere.
