Leading opponents of the war have mostly been silent as president-elect Barack Obama, who first built his national image on the foundation of his early opposition to the Iraq war, assembles a group of national security hands that is anything but a team of doves.
It's a disorienting moment for the peace wing of the Democratic Party, at once elated America selected a new president opposed to the Iraq war and momentarily disoriented by the imminent removal of a commander-in-chief whose every action they've opposed for the past eight years.
“Shock has paralyzed them for the moment,” said Steven Clemons, a senior fellow at the New America Foundation who writes The Washington Note, a popular foreign policy blog. “We are in an Obama bubble now. And it’s tough to step out and be first to deflate the bubble.”
Especially, he added, before that bubble takes shape.
“You’ve got some people like myself who are saying there may be an interesting design in what Obama is trying to do. Maybe it doesn’t fit easily in a neatly sculpted box of liberal pacifist and warmonger hawk. Maybe it’s more complex than that.”
Still, it’s clearly a team that tilts to the right of Democratic foreign policy thought.

Gotta say, what jumped out at me first was how familiar this sentiment is across the board in presidential politics. I swear I heard these same types of comments regarding GWB!

If Obama and McCain had essentially the same politics, then what exactly was the election about then, just personality?
Didn’t Obama actually vote against the war BEFORE he was in the senate. His spirit was there.
Obama is a virtual 3rd Bush term with a Clinton rehash cabinet.

Obama signalled last summer that Gates would be kept on and that there would be no substantial change in Iraq policy.
Maliki even endorsed him. I am certain Obama was involved in the troop status negotiations with Bush and Maliki.
Bush wanted Obama, and he used Iraq and the Economy to help him win.
I think Obama has made the calculation that he can throw the anti-war fringe overboard because these kooks will support him no matter what. They’ll never under any circumstances support a Republican, so what does he have to lose here, other than having to endure Code Pinkos infiltrating congressional hearings?

Maybe it’s the holiday and maybe it was because I was up late but anyone else have a slight glimmer of hope this may not be as horrible as we thought?

The election was about race. Clinton would have wiped out a White Obama in the primaries, all else being equal.
Some of these pacifists may get a little less so when the type of terrorist attack that is happenining in India now starts to happen here. What will Obama do? The peace mongers just don’t get that it’s us or them.
My mom recently got searched before getting on a flight and she said she had to laugh because the muslim looking guys in front of her in line got on the plane with no search whatsoever and she had been a little scared thinking they were on the plane with her and she had expected security to search them. Instead, they single out a seventy year old woman? A couple of liberals I told this story to said it was my mom’s fault for having those thoughts about the guys with darker skin color. Karma.

I don't think the the peace-nicks really realize what would happen of our military just quit and came home.

But here’s the thing, if Obama had run as a Republican centrist, he would have been creamed in the election as well. So it seems as if Democrats have to look like leftists, but assure the powers-that-be they are centrists to win - if they’re black. If they’re Republicans who run as centrists, they lose regardless of race.
Mark my words, Obama’s biggest opponents, obstacles, and problems will come from the left and not the right. Reid and Pelosi are just two of them.

He’ll be center right on Foreign Policy and Center left on Domestic. On the Domestic side he will have plenty of opportunity and bones to throw to the moonbats to shut them up if he plays it right.
As for me, I’m not holding my breath on anything coming out of the Barry Administration.
I should also say that we have to see what Congress does.
