One Democratic operative suggests keeping track of Barack Obamas cabinet selections with a March Madness-type tournament chart. While no official announcements have been made, a controlled series of leaks have given a good sense of who's still in contention, and which big names have been bounced from the bracket.
The new administration still has some major posts to fill, including heads for the departments of Defense, Housing and Urban
Development, Transportation, Labor, and Energy, not to mention the Environmental Protection Agency. But a number of the biggest prizes seem to have already been won, and a handful of serious contenders already been passed over in the speed-dating game that is the Obama transition.
Here's a look at five major players and the jobs they have apparently not been given:
John Kerry, StateThe Massachusetts Senator and former Democratic presidential nominee was a passionate, articulate and early supporter of Obama, a fixture on both conference calls and the Sunday talk show circuit. Kerrys people say he never had any expectations of being named Secretary of State but other Democrats say he made no secret of his Foggy Bottom aspirations. Hes crushed, said one Senate aide. Kerry would have been a fine pick, sources say, but Obama apparently had his eye on Hillary Clinton since the early fall. He does get an impressive consolation prize: the chairmanship of the Foreign Relations Committee vacated by Joe Biden.

How’s it feel to be affirmative action’d out of your precious little Cabinet ego trip, Johnny Boy?
“Crushed”
Does this mean Purple Heart #4??
poor John, hey John wht the long face
Really? I didn't see or hear anything apparent there. Not to worry, "the Haughty" John Kerry has a plan. He was going to be SoS before he decided not to.
Sorry folks but he’s elected now and really your services aren’t needed anymore. See you all in 4 years! *sarcasm*
Looks like Obama made a whole bunch of promises to everyone who now are finding out they’ve been had. LOL
“So Obama is leaving all the real losers out of his cabinet? He may be a pinko but hes no dummy.”
No, Obama is a dummy. It’s the people pulling his strings that aren’t.
Yeah, there’s just something about Prince John the Gaunt that I find even more distasteful than Hillary, and that’s really saying something.
Kerry would have been a fine p(r)ick, sources say...
Yup.The memories are seared into his memory.Christmas Day 1968 in Cambodia.Ordered there by Richard Milhous Nixon.
Kerry is the last pick for dodgeball.
Kerry should be proud that the new Cabinet will “look like America.” Like a lot of white libs, diversity only matters after he gets the job that he wants.
Kerry was a shoo-in for SOS.... if McCain had won.
You know, when Obama handed out that questionaire sheet maybe Kerry had to admit he once had a gun.
Now Kerry knows how his medals felt, when he tossed them over the fence.
Maybe this snub will be “seared” into his memory forever.
Kerry is fluent in French. Obama could pick him for US ambassador to France. If that’s a post requiring more deftness and tact than Kerry possesses, he could be sent to one of the former French colonies. Madagascar, for example, or Burkina Faso, or maybe Cambodia.
I wouldn’t want to see Kerry even be secretary of the liquor cabinet.
I wouldn’t put him in charge of the dog food pantry, either.
